Bumming Around

Happy Halloweeeeeen 🙂

When I was a little girl, every once in a while on weekends where not much was going on, my dad and I would spend the day together. It’d start out with a breakfast at the local diner, and where we’d go from there was up to the wind. We’d take off in the car and meander around town until we’d come up with somewhere to go. Popular ventures included garage sales, neighborhoods with grand or interesting houses, local antique shops, and other places weren’t on a to-do list or included in a list of errands. We’d just go to go.

We called it “just bumming around."

Yesterday reminded me of those days.

Nothing was on my to do list. Well, there’s always something on my to do list, but it wasn’t urgent yesterday.

It started out with breakfast at a [very] local kitchen table:

And from there, I bummed around to the Farmer’s Market. It’s the last one of the year [tear] and I wanted to fill up on some local organic produce:

IMG_0752Sweet potatoes??

I left with an abundance of greens and some heirloom tomatoes I bought purely for the sake of clinging the end of summer with a death grip.

And from there, I bummed on over to Von Maur to meet my friend Heidi – just to say hello…

But we all know that isn’t possible for me to do at Von Maur. I picked the darker one, by the way. Thanks for your opinions I solicited on Twitter yesterday 😉

It just called out to me!

And from there, the bumming around went to Fresh Market, where I picked up even more fresh produce and some coffee.

I meandered home to pick up the husband to join in on the bumming around, and needed a snack. After stocking up on all that delicious and nutritious produce, I decided on a twix, naturally.

             IMG_9908

Shane and I had no place in mind to go, but found ourselves at Friar Tuck for a wine tasting, where we were persuaded to pick up a couple bottles, and then to a certain dealership looking at a certain car that I may have in my future come January (!!) 🙂

To a Starbuck’s where we both ordered a salted caramel hot chocolate:

IMG_1383

BAD idea. I drink, therefore I am addicted now.

When we ran out places to bum around, I found myself back at home, with my dirty floors looking at me a little too hard.

So I baked.

IMG_9918

An apple pie!

Using this recipe, I baked up the first apple pie of the season, and according to the husband, the best homemade apple pie ever!

IMG_9911

How perfect of a Saturday. It was the first one where I didn’t wake up with a plan or have things to get done. In fact, I can’t remember the last time Shane and I had the “What do you want to do today?”-“I don’t know what do you want to do?”-“What is there to do?” conversation. I didn’t think about working out today. I didn’t think about work today. Heck, I didn’t think about taking a shower today until it was after 2:00 p.m. and even then I waited two more hours.

I just bummed around!

And now I’m off to RUN around:) Got a 9 miler ahead of me today – so long as the plantar faschia agrees with me. Then maybe a lunch date?

Happy Sunday!!! And Happy Halloweeeeeen!

Where do you go when you bum around?

Bring it, Summer. Bring it.

Last chance to enter to win a variety pack of the new flavors of Lara Bars! I’ll pick a winner in tomorrow mornings post! 🙂

Man! I feel like a brand new woman!…who doesn’t have as much time in her day. I slept in way past what I usually do both today and yesterday! Even Niko thought it was weird:

IMG_8151

OK, I lied…she slept in with me 😉

I gotta say, although I missed the hours in my day, my body feels pretty marvelous – so marvelous!

How’s your Sunday morning going so far? Mine’s swell, but I have a lot to catch up on – no time for a post yesterday. I was too busy living sleeping!

Friday night, one of my BFF’s, Jessica, who’s going to get married next weekend came over with her fiance, Clint:

IMG_0093(I think I caught Clint mid-chew…sorry Clint! 🙂 )

I’m pretty sure they’re the coolest and cutest couple ever. I’ve been BFF’s with Jessica since 4th grade and I seriously couldn’t have picked a better guy for her to be with. Can’t wait to stand up next to her when she gets married 😀

When they came over we immediately started grilling. We were all starved, and wolfed down tons of food.

jalapeño cheddar rolls (you heard me)

IMG_0095

So. stuffed. But oh-so-good.

After clean up and making a couple drinks (hello nectarine dream!)

IMG_0096IMG_0097

…we got our euchre faces on! We had time for about three games. The girls started off strong by winning the first game in about 5 minutes flat, but then our luck ran out during the second and third games. Le sigh. We were pretty sure they cheated 😉

It was around midnight when they headed out, so we headed to bed shortly after.

But awakening shortly after did not happen. I didn’t wake up until 9:00!! That’s super late for me, guys. Yes, even for a Saturday. I always wake up around 6:30 or 7:00 on weekends – so I was a bit disoriented when I woke up at 9:00. But it was one of those sleeps where my body was begging me to stay asleep. I actually awoke around 6:30 with a sore throat, feeling sick, so I went back to bed. My body must have bargained with the cold for a few more hours of sleep because when I woke up the second time, there were no signs of a cold!

Predicament: meeting my girl Heidi 30 minutes later at the Farmer’s Market.

In my rested state, I showered and then made a whole wheat protein waffle at warp speed:

IMG_0098

Whole wheat protein waffles! This is my breakfast staple of the summer. I have it probably four or five out of the seven days of the week now.

Then I was out the door! Luckily, Heidi’s always late too, so when I rolled up to the farmer’s market and quarter ’til 10, she was just arriving too 🙂

IMG_0100 IMG_0101

Even though it was only 10, we were both sweating through our shirts. It was one hot Saturday. Bring, it summer. Oh yeah, bring it. I got some corn, snap peas, a peck of peaches (hehe) and a zucchini. After an hour of trudging through the heat and humidity, Heidi came up with the genius idea to get out of the heat.

Coffee Hound!

IMG_0102

I got a small iced coffee

IMG_0105
and a nice chat with a bestie.

IMG_0106

Still on the go, I had to run home to meet my aunt and take her to the airport!

My aunt Bobbie is an avid bloggy reader (Hi Auntie Bobbie!!) and she’d been visiting for a few days – unfortunately I only got to see her for a few minutes, but that just makes more of an excuse to go visit her where she lives in Florida later in the year 😀

IMG_0108

Aunt Bobbie is my mom’s sister:

IMG_0110

Lunch was at one of the usual joints – Fiesta Ranchera and I got the usual order – it never fails. Never!

IMG_0111
Look at that hunk of brock!

IMG_0112

And then we did a little damage at Target and Von Maur. Shopping bug = squashed 😉

The rest of Saturday did not entail the productiveness I’d intended, but I did get some laundry done and a quickie elliptical workout in.

In the evening, Shane’s buddy Jason came over and we all had a nectarine dream and then went to see Inception at the theatre. It was all right. Pretty trippy, but I won’t be watching it again. It was one of those movies that took probably 45 minutes for the setting to be developed., y’know? I personally think we should have seen Eclipse 😉 Maha

By the time we got home, it was past 9 and we were pretty hungry. The conditions were right for pizza delivery:

IMG_0113

My plate:

IMG_0114Times two. Of the pizza. What can I say, when I abstain from food for 6 hours I get a little crazy.

Collapsing into bed took place soon after, and nine (nine!!!) hours later, here we are!

I’m about to go train a few clients and then get a triceps/biceps sesh and a four mile run in of my own. Then, today WILL be a productive day.

How was your all’s weekend?

Edited to say that I meant to publish this at 8:30 this morning, but it’s 1:45 and it must not have published! Oops! Oh, and the productiveness has yet to commence. Aaaannnnd go!

B-e-a-utiful Day!

It’s such a beautiful day outside today! I’m about to go take Niko for a walkie:D

Body pump kicked my boo-tay this morning! I haven’t gone in probably a month, as I’ve just been lifting weights on my own, and I forgot how strenuous endurance strength-training is every once in a while 🙂 I needed it, because there was an abs session at the end, and I’ve been slacking on my abs. It’s pretty much an awesome hour-long weight lifting class that focuses on every muscle in the body. It rocked my socks off.

When I got home from class, I made some eggs in a hole toast to refuel.

I used hemp bread, and had a very delicious breakfast.

I kind a had to scarf it down, because I was meeting a friend at the Farmer’s Market soon.

It was her first time there, and she was amazed at how huge it was. I took some pictures of some cool veggies and pretty sunflowers while I was there.

and bought a HUGE squash.

And sipped on some Honest Tea while we browsed.

Yum, yum!

We had to split afterward, and I headed to the grocery stores. Ugh. People were so annoying today, and I totally went over my $100 budget. Oopsie. Well, at least I know I’ll use the ingredients, thanks to my new meal planning system (I’ll have to show you all the system soon!)

I got a crap ton of groceries, but here are a few things I’m extra-excited about that I bought:

Granola, Bees Knees, Honest Tea, Baybel cheese

Raw almonds to make almond butter

Peanut Butter filled pretzels from Naturally Yours

When I got home and put the groceries away, it was time for lunch. Since the hubski was busy working on his car, I made some burgers on the GF grill. I used cow burger for Shane’s, and turkey burger for mine. I seasoned them each with a mix of jalapeno pepper, cumin, pepper flakes, and garlic powder.

Then placed a bella mushroom on top (and some baybel cheese under the shroomie) and grilled some more, and then topped it with ketchup and mustard.

Ahhh this burger was SO good. I was very proud of my grill masta skillz, haha.

Not sure what we’re doing tonight yet. I’ve mentioned seeing the Time Traveler’s Wife to Shane a couple times, but he didn’t seem to in to it and hasn’t mentioned it since, so we’ll see 🙂

Question: What’s your favorite way to make something out of a butternut squash?

Saturday Mischief

Saturdays are the best. I’ve gotten so much done today, and it’s only half over! Plus, I got in some good eats.

I intended on waking up and going straight to the gym, but the lazy side of me wanted to make oat pancakes instead. The latter won me over 😛

There’s a lot of oat pancake recipes floating around the blogosphere right now, but I got this one from Oh She Glows

They were super simple to make, and turned out wonderful. I had mine with some Mighty Maple Peanut Butter and some pure maple syrup.

Of course, I enjoyed my breakfast with a cup of joe.

MMmmm. Next time I’ll be brave enough to be a little more creative and add in some mix-ins.

After inhaling breakfast, I met up with my friend, Carmody at the Farmer’s Market. I swear it seemed even bigger this week than the last time we went. I think the cooler weather brought out double the amount of people, too.

There was TONS of cool produce that I had no clue even existed. Like Squash Blossoms?

Apparently they are edible flowers that can either make prettiful garnishes or be stuffed with cheese and fried up, as they are quite bland alone.

Another one was lilac peppers. I thought these were SO pretty in color.

I was completely out of honey at home, so I got super excited to see this booth:

I ended up getting the second from the left. And yes, the only reason why is because it was shaped like a cute little bear! 😛

In addition to food, the Farmer’s Market also has on display all kinds of art work from hand-made purses to glass blown jewelry. Today one of the vendors was actually blowing the glass here at the market.

It was really cool to watch him melt and mold the glass in such awesome jewelry.

Leaving with 3 bags full of goods, I ended up spending more than intended – as usual!

Once I got the goods home and put away, it was gym time. Today I took it pretty easy:

  • 10 minute warm up walk on the treadmill at 6.5% incline
  • Weights – which included the Pull Muscles: Bicep curls, modified bicep curls, lateral pull down, straight arm lateral pull down, row, and reverse crunches on a stability ball
  • 10 minute cool down walk on the treadmill at 6.5% incline

I left feeling like I had a good workout, but not wore out. However, I was starving again. Lunch was BBQ! I went out to eat at my favorite BBQ place here in town, Bandana’s. As usual, I ordered the pork plate. For sides I got green beans and a baked potato. It also comes with garlic bread, of which I had a couple bites.

As you can see, the pork on my plate is naked. But don’t worry, I didn’t let it stay that way! I gave it an assortment of sauce 😛

And had an Iced Tea to wash it all down.

Now it’s time for a little relaxing before beginning part two of Saturday. Tonight, my good friend Kim and her BF and coming over to play. I’m sure we’ll be up to no good! 😛 They’re from out of town, so they will probably end up staying over night here. If so, this will probably be my last post of the day, so I hope you have a great part two to your Saturday, too!

Pretty Purple Potatoes

Yay for alliteration! haha Oh, and yay that tomorrow’s Friday! woo hoo!!

Today was hella busy. It seemed like every time I finished one task, I’d have someone requesting another. Such is work, though, right?

The company I work at has its own farmer’s market at their park, and tonight was the second night it’s been open this summer. So when I got off of work, my friend, Missy, and I decided to try it out. We were both Farmer’s Market virgins of this market! haha. I forgot my camera, but it wasn’t too impressive. It literally had about 3 booths, whereas the down town Farmer’s Market fills about 3 blocks! However, I spotted a few goodies that I’d never had before, and wanted to try.

Have you ever had purple potatoes?

They were bred out of Cornell University for their mega nutrients and flavor…or so the farmer’s market lady said 😉 I’m very excited to try them. They weren’t too expensive either – $2.50 for about a pound. I’m thinking maybe in a crock pot with a roast and some carrots? How would you prepare them?

Next in my shopping bag went some Swiss Chard. I’m not exactly sure how to prepare this either, but they said it could be used like one would use spinach. I love spinach, so I was in! And, it was just so colorful and pretty…
Then I saw some Kale, and new I wanted to try this. I’ve been wanting to try this in a green monster. I asked the booth lady how it would be in a juice, and she said she’s heard of it being blended with carrots and granny smith apples. Can you guess what I’ll be picking up at the grocery store?? 😉

When we were heading back to the car, I overheard a market go-er say, “I’m not sure what it is, but I know kale is very good for you.” I don’t really know why it’s so good for you either. So, the journalist in me jumped on the web and started researching.

According to the Whole Foods website (which I love!), it’s extremely high in vitamins K, A, and C, and very high in manganese.

And according to health.learninginfo.org, Kale…

“is a superfood. It’s a member of the Brassica family of vegetables, which include cabbage and Brussels sprouts. Unless you exist totally on Big Macs and supersized fries, you probably know that cabbage and Brussels sprouts have gained quite the reputation as cancer-fighting foods. And kale is loaded with the organosulfur compounds that may lessen the occurrence of some cancers. Studies suggest that the phytonutrients in kale and other Brassicas may actually help the liver neutralize potentially cancerous substances.”

So in sum, the market go-er was right, it’s very good for you 😀

This ended the farmer’s market purchases, but hopefully next time I visit, they’ll have more vendors and more food to offer.

Today’s Eats

Breakfast on-the-go: Puffins! I love these little guys.
I think my run made me hungry, because around 9, I was already hungry again! A trip to the cafe helped squander the beast:
Love these guys too. Bananas and PB (although I prefer it with almond butter.) It held me off perfectly until lunch, which was out to a little local Italian restaurant with Shane and some work buds.

I started off with a salad with oil and vinaigrette dressing:
I didn’t finish it though…I’m not a huge fan of the iceberg lettuce. But the entree did not disappoint! Mmm chicken parmigiana 😀
Look at all that sauce! Underneath of it was hiding a good size piece of chicken topped with mozzarella. I finished all of the chicken, but left about half of the noodles. It was fab.

When I got home, I was hungry again and noticed my plum was finally ripe, so I gobbled it up in about 20 seconds!
I couldn’t even wait to take the picture!

It was a pretty good day all in all, and I’m super excited to try my new Farmer’s Market Foods.

What kind of new foods are you itching try?
