Vitamix Pipe Dreams and an Anniversary Giveaway

Afternoon!

Thanks for all the anniversary wishes 😀 I have to admit, I felt a little vulnerable posting all of those wedding pictures. But…then I figured they’re posted elsewhere on the internet (with our permission) for the public to see, so why not?

I woke up this morning and deemed it only appropriate to bring out my anniversary present to make an anniversary breakfast:

 IMG_9514

For those of you who guessed a Vitamix, you guessed right.

IMG_9482

I may or may not have done a happy dance…

IMG_9486

However, the trickster got me at first. A box filled with a cook book…cotton balls…and bricks? “Well cotton balls represent the 2nd year anniversary,” he said. By this time, I knew he was joking 😉

 IMG_9475

See what he did for the first traditional anniversary gift here.

The real deal.

IMG_9495

Obviously, I began filling it up and blending my little heart frozen bananas out:

IMG_9496

Let it be known that I thought owning a Vitamix was among the wishes of finally finding “a spot” for my keys, leaving the house on time for work, and dating Justin Timberlake. You know, a pipedream.

 IMG_9497

smoothest smoothie evaa.

Shane’s response to my Vitamix pleas were along the line of "you’re out of your freaking mind.”

IMG_9500

Needless to say, it was a very pleasant surprise 😀

IMG_9503

the vortex I’d only heard about in story books Vitamix reviews.

I immediately put it to the test.

What used to take around 5 MINUTES of me looking like I was dirty dancing with my old blender (it took constant shaking in order for it to get what I was blending smooth) took the Vitamix not even 30 seconds.

 IMG_9507

I was amazed. And I obviously have a slight obsession with pumpkin pie smoothies in a bowl with crumbled whole wheat pumpkin bread on top 😉

—————-

ok, ok – now on to the Anniversary Giveaway!

My friend Debby from Sahale Snacks is offering ONE reader TWO Sahale Snack gifts!

The classic and delicious Valdosta pecans.

Read my review of Sahale snacks waaayyyyy back in this post. If you don’t feel like reading, I liked ‘em – very delicious glazed nuts!

To enter the giveaway, leave a comment about a dream that you once thought was a pipe dream, but has since come true! It can be silly like owning a Vitamix (actually…that’s very serious business) or serious like a huge life change.

Comment away – and I’ll pick a winner at random and in Thursday morning’s post 😀

Have a fabulous end to your Monday, friends! I’m off to do a wee bit more work, and then Shane and I are going to celebrate the anniversary a little more 🙂

Alcohol and Athletes

Morning!

I’m pretty beat. Tuesdays and Thursdays are my ultra long days, and from running at 5 in the morning yesterday to training until dark, I was one tired chica. Today, however, I only have to attend one of my part time gigs (Hi, BIC 🙂 ) and then I’m doing something I haven’t been able to do since I broke up with my gym. I’m excited, and I’ll write more about it after the class (any guesses?)

The other day, (Labor Day) the husband suggested we cook out. You all know I love grilling out, but the only thing I had to grill out was a chick’n boca burger, and that just didn’t sound good. What’s a girl to do?

Well, if you read Mama Pea’s blog, you may know the answer to this question…

IMG_9290

Cheezeburgers!

Guys. If you are looking for a good veggie burger recipe, this is it. I took one bite, and told Shane, “I don’t think I should be eating this…I’m vegetarian!” It’s been about a year since I’ve had a real burger, but this tasted SO burger-like. It was almost eerie. But a delicious eerie 😉

IMG_9286

With it, roasted okra + sourdough garlic bread.

IMG_9291

A perfect late summer’s meal.

Pre-dinner, we lined our stomach with homemade pico and guac w/ some tortilla chips

Alcohol and Athletics

I don’t keep it a secret on the blog that I enjoy a few cocktails from time to time…

Sometmes beer

 IMG_8794

Mostly wine

 IMG_9023

Every now and then, a mixed drink with a girlfriend.

IMG_0044

But gone are the days in my unhealthy ways when I would drink to the point of extreme drunkenness. I just don’t care for the feeling the day afterward…or really the feeling that night anymore for that matter!

Being an athlete, (sure, I’ll consider myself an athlete) there are several things to consider in regards to partaking in the occasional adult beverage or two. After each workout, the body needs to recover. When one drinks several alcoholic beverages per week, it’s inevitably factored into muscle repair and recovery.

Consider this:

  • Drinking alcohol, especially when it carries into the late night, disrupts sleep. Sleep in key in workout recovery.
  • Alcohol is absorbed directly from the stomach into the bloodstream within 5 minutes after consumption.
  • Although alcohol is a fluid, it’s also a diuretic. The more you consume, the more fluids you lose. Have at least one glass of water for every alcoholic beverage you drink.

After those three points considered, if you still drink to the point of having a hangover, here are a few points to consider about hangovers:

  • Hangovers are mostly due to dehydration and loss of electrolytes.
  • To lessen the hangover’s effects, drink water and beverages with sodium – gatorade, broth, soup.
  • Hangovers generally take 12 hours (or more) to pass.

So do you have to abstain from alcohol completely for your body to recover during training? No! Is your body going to recover and repair more quickly when drinks are not consumed in excess? Heck yes!

With that said, cheers to moderation, solid recovery, and fun!

Fun Run Friday + a Super Cool Giveaway

Hi there!

A couple weeks ago I posted about a run that was a little out of the usual for me. Instead of taking my usual loop or bigger loop around the neighborhood or run an out and back on the trail, I took my adventures elsewhere. I ran the two miles and change to the gym, did a little weight lifting routine, and ran back. It was fun. It was a Friday. Thus, Fun Run Friday was born.

Today’s Fun Run Friday takes us to the trails.

IMG_0313

Or a park. Or basically anywhere you can find a bench or an elevated steady surface.

IMG_0312

On the trail by my house, there are benches dispersed along the way for people to sit down and take a rest on. Or in this case, add a little strength to your cardio!

For this run, each time I came to a bench, I performed a different strength training exercise.

At the first benchstop, were step ups:

    IMG_0316   IMG_0321

For the step-ups, just make sure you have a stable, elevated surface, and then start with your right leg. With your entire foot on the surface, press down to lift your body up until your left foot brushes against the back of the surface.

IMG_0315

The left foot is just along for the ride – the right leg is doing all the work. Repeat with the right leg 10 times and then switch to the left. Do two more sets, then continue on your run/walk/skip/whathaveyou.

Next up, dips!

IMG_0317

To make dips easier, move your feet closer to your body. To make them more challenging, move them away.

IMG_0318

Remember to keep your hips close to the bench and to keep your shoulders down away from your ears! These can even be done on the ground.

And we’re off!…until a half mile later and it’s time for incline pushups!

IMG_0314

These are also great if you struggle with doing ground pushups. Want an ab challenge instead? Just hold youself up with your arms in extended position, breathing easy for 1 minute. Repeat three times.

The last strength training move I did was an inverted pushup. This works your delts. I love this move. You just act like you’re going to do an incline pushup, and then form your body into an inverted V

IMG_0321

From there, pull our shoulders back, kind of like how you would if you were doing downward dog in yoga. Look through your arms to your knees, and then lower and raise yourself.

This is where I stopped, but you could also use the bench as your elevated surface for some elevated lunges 😉

Let me know if you try out any of these moves on your next “fun run!”

Give it away, give it away, give it away nah: Thermos Style!

image

Remember the super cool (no pun intended, heh) Thermos bottle I reviewed on the blog the other day? It kept my agua supah cool while shopping in 90 degree heat for hours!

Well, the lovely Maggie from Thermos is offering one RAN reader a chance to win one themselves

To enter, just leave a comment saying why you’re supah cool! For example, I’m supah cool because I had a mini photo shoot of me with my booty in the air for an inverted pushup on a crowded public trail 😉 Ohh yeeeaaaah

The contest is open to US residents only (sorry:( ) and will be open until Tuesday.

Hope you guys have an awesome Friday that leads to an even awesomer weekend! I’m off to train some clients and then research vacations – whoop whoop!!

Can I Get a Cantaloupe? (And Giveaway Winner!)

Hey lovelies! How’s the start to your week going? Mine’s been pretty dandy! Yesterday was a doozy though. Nothing bad, just long, and one of those days where I’m going from here to there so much that I had to split dinner into two parts!

Part 1: Homemade Brown Rice Lentil Veggie Burger before training

IMG_8797

With some Blues Terra chips – these things are amazing! Can’t believe I hadn’t tried them before.

IMG_8798

Only one more burger left in the fridge…tear. But there are more in the freezer for later 😀

And some banana soft serve w/ almond butter post training.

IMG_8806

When you add almond butter to the mix it makes it more meal-like 😀

IMG_8809

And chocolate chips don’t hurt either 😉

I did finally get a start to packing for the Healthy Living Summit though. Whoop whoop!

Also,  I completely forgot to announce the winner of the Terra chips giveaway yesterday, so I’ll make sure to do that at the end of this post 😀

——————

Can you believe I’ve never bought a cantaloupe before? I actually didn’t like cantaloupe growing up. I didn’t even like it last year! However, a couple weeks ago I was at a wedding where it was one of the only vegetarian options being served. All of the sudden  I was in love! Not sure if it was because hunger’s the tastiest spice or because my taste buds changed, but I knew I had to have it again!

IMG_8751

This past weekend, I stopped by the cantaloupe rack (you know, right next to the banana rack! 😛 ) picked one up, acted like I knew what I was doing by smelling it and tossing it up in the air a little bit, and took it home with me.

 IMG_8752

and hacked into it.

 IMG_8755

Bliss! It was just as delicious as I imagined! Then I got a bright idea. I remembered seeing a honeydew melon made into a breakfast bowl on Taylor’s blog, and knew I had to incorporate it into my breakfast the next day.

 IMG_8756

In a small bowl, I mixed together some Kashi cereal, oats, chia seeds, maca, almond butter, and jay robb brown rice protein powder, put it in the hollowed out cantaloupe, and poured in some milk.

 IMG_8758

Fantastic.

IMG_8760

I was surprised at how well the melon held the milk. I figured it would absorb the liquid right up, but I was wrong!

IMG_8759

My next victim will be the honeydew melon:D

Off for to a 4.5 miler! Tata!

…what?

…Oh, that’s right, the giveaway 😉

Congrats to Hillary!

image

Hillary, please shoot me an email with your information so I can have Stephanie get your loot off to ya!

Have a fabulous Wednesday, all!

Is there a fruit you don’t like? Have you tried it recently? I also had/have somewhat of an aversion to tomatoes. I still don’t like them by themselves, but now like to eat them on sandwiches and in salads.

TERRA Chips Accomplishments Giveaway

Good morning! How are you today on this midweek day?

My week started out slow and easy on Monday, but has revved up fast! Yesterday was filled with BIC work and training appointments. On busy days, it’s sometimes hard to do anything but go to the meetings/work/appointments on my schedule, you know, like cook dinner! But yesterday I managed to muster in some time to whip up a delicious Indian feast!

IMG_8606

On Monday, I had made some brown rice for the week:

IMG_8592

And the sauce:

IMG_8588

And then last night when I got done training, I fried up the eggplant in a little EVOO on the stove, added the sauce, and simmered until warm:

 IMG_8605

Deeelicious! The recipe for the sauce and the whole recipe will go up on the recipes tab (as well as some other recipes this Friday.)

 IMG_8607

I served it atop the rice and with a piece of Trader Joe’s Tandoori Naan.

IMG_8608

I never cook on a Tuesday night! It felt like I accomplished something out of the norm for a Tuesday night. Of course meetings and jobs are important, but it’s nice to make the time for a home cooked meal 🙂

Juicin’ Up and Lara Bar Winners

Hiiii guys! This is gonna be a quickie post because this girl needs a nap. I slept horribly last night but luckily, I have a few hours until my next client…

Yesterday turned out to be pretty busy for a Sunday! I was at the gym training and getting a workout in myself from about 8:30 until 12:30.

I came home and promptly juiced up.

IMG_8164

Apple, 2 carrots, 1 small beet

IMG_8163

IMG_8175

Mmmm- such a great combination!

I drank the juice alongside a deliciously fresh salad.

IMG_8182 IMG_8185

A salad dressed in balsamic + EVOO, topped with shrooms, kamlata olives, feta, and tempeh.

IMG_8186

Nomtastic!

For dessert, my hand snuck in Shane’s animal crackers:

IMG_8187 A seal!

IMG_8188

Ooh, a lion!

IMG_8189

With food in belly, I mustered up some motivation to get a little desk work done. I have a couple projects going on that need much more attention than I’ve been giving them lately. My 4 miler + weights sesh must have revved up my metabolism, because at 5:00 I was down stairs cooking dinner!

IMG_8190

I peeled and chopped an eggplant and sauteed it with an onion. Next, I made my very own Tikka Masala sauce completely on a whim. You can imagine my surprise when I discovered it actually tasted wonderful! I’ll post the recipe soon in the recipes tab.

IMG_8194

Yay for Indian food!

Eaten alongside asparagus and a jalepeno cheddar roll.

IMG_8191   This meal was hot-hot-hot!

  IMG_8196

So hot, that it called for a cool down a few hours later. This my friends, is banana soft serve w/ dark chocolate chips mixed in.

IMG_8199 Utterly amazing.

Meta Writing

It’s a technical term. I technically made it up in my head 😉

Hi guys! How ya doin on this fine Tuesday night? I decided to post tonight instead of tomorrow morning, because if I went with the latter, I’m not sure there would be a post to publish. Tomorrow is an endurance day. By that, I mean I’ll be working sunup to sundown. Hardcore.

This morning I had to get in a supah quick run. I’d planned on running a three mile interval run, sprinting for .2 miles and jogging for .1 miles for 3 miles total. Kinda like reverse HIIT. That’s a technical term too 😉 After realizing that I pressed snooze two too many times and I didn’t want to be caught running around the house yelling, “sh!t! I’m late!! Crap!!” I cut it down to 2.5 miles. Actually…who am I kidding, I still ran out the door saying those exact words, but that’s neither here nor there.

Post-run breakfast:

 IMG_0058

One bigass whole wheat protein waffle with the usual toppings. Guys, this stuffed me to the brim. I didn’t have time to pack a lunch for work, but that’s OK. This held me for five hours until I meandered down to the cafeteria to grab an apple and a banana to eat with a handful of almonds. I just didn’t want anything heavy.

Before heading home, I munched on a chocolate brownie Lara Bar. Lara Bar really hit the mark when concocting these flavors. This was pure excellence. Still rating the cookie dough flavor numero uno out of the ones I’ve had so far (Carrot Cake and the Brownie) but this one falls closely behind. So good, with no artificial-tasting flavor.

I told you guys how I’ve been STARVED lately and just end up making whatever I can get my hands on for dinner, so I played it safe today and made a Green Monster to hold off the hunger beast within.

IMG_0059 It provided some energy to help the hubsky plant the veggies one of my clients gave me!

 IMG_0060

Sweet peppers, hot peppers, and tomatoes. Grow baby, groooowwww 🙂

IMG_0061

Later the husband finally mentioned the word dinner and I was chopping veggies in five seconds flat.

IMG_0062

It was a grill night, which meant all I had to do was chop and season the veggies. Perfect.

IMG_0068

Mound o’ veggies.IMG_0066

Had them with grilled potatoes, a veggie burger, and a glass of red vino. Totally delicious and nutritious.

Dessert was my book, the patio, and my dog. The ultimate summer evening can be considered a dessert, m’friends.

Mental Stories

Today I realized how much I “write” stuff in my head. Whether it’s for the blog or for another project I’m working on, when I have time to be idle and not concentrating on something, my mind always goes into writing mode. By this I mean, I was writing this post in my head on my walk from the BIC building to my car. As I was planting the plants, and as I was waiting for the husband to talk about dinner (I’m hungry, damnit! 😛 )

Writers (we’ve all got a little writer in us!) do you have a writing dialogue going on in your head when you’re not concentrating on a task at hand? – or while you are…I’ll take a side of ADD with my inner dialogue 😛 Like I said, I do! Sometimes I get so deep in thought that I almost have to shake myself out of it LOL. And I actually thought about this question while mentally writing. What is that, meta mental writing? LOL

Have a fabulous night, everyone, and an even better hump day! See you Thursday morning, and don’t forget to enter my New Flavors of Lara Bar giveaway! 🙂
