Running Around (on) a Budget

Welcome to the weekend! Ooooh yeah! 😉

So far I’ve spent this sunny, brisk morning walking Niko and getting into a cleaning frenzy for my cardio! I was going to run my long run today (11 miles again) but I have to train three clients starting mid-morning, so I figured I’d leave it to tomorrow morning. Plus, Lord knows housework has been neglected the past few weeks, so why not turn it into some fun? 45 minutes of housework cardio, annnnd go! However, my tummy’s starting to rumble, so I foresee an oatmeal break in my future…

Yesterday I started my Friday out with a nice little trip to the gym after a solid 7 hours of sleep. I felt like I had plenty of energy on the treadmill when I ran 3.5 miles at an (almost) 5k pace. I could have kept on going, but I wanted to get in some upperbody weights, too:

Inverted pushups on stability ball – 2×10

Incline dumbbell chest press – 15 lbs – 2×12

Triceps dips – 2×10 (oof)

Just a quickie weight session – took about 20 minutes.

Once home and showered, I was almost out of oats (the horror!!) so I decided to make another mongo green monster:

Except I was out of spinach (the horror x’s 2!) Never fret, a fruit smoothie’s a sure bet.

Ice, 1 frozen banana, ½ c. frozen blueberries, 1 scoop of Jay Robb brown rice pp, maca, water, flaxmeal, coconut butter.

Topped with Ezekiel granola.

I love using this granola because it’s SO crunchy. Even when it sinks below the top of the smoothie.    

This smoothie kept me full for quite some time, but eventually da tum was in need of some grub:

I tried out this Split Pea soup for lunch. I was a little hesitant, because split pea soup can either be amazing or atrocious. I took a look at the ingredients, and still wasn’t sure I’d like it…

But luckily, this version was amazing!

After work, I trained a client and hurried home to get picked up to go to Bunco. It feels like I never stop…

Typically the food at Bunco is pretty unhealthy and not veg-friendly, so I made a quickie dinner:

Bunco was a blast, regardless. And girlfriends + wine + laughter= a good night – exhausted or not! And even better? I won!

Running Around (on) a Budget

Shane and I have been trying to cut costs pretty much all around. The other night, my analyst of a husband created a big spreadsheet depicting all of our bills, expenses, incomes, etc.

It really helped to have it all laid out all organized with categories. 

Basically, I need to find a cheaper hair salon, and I need to quit buy so much expensive food. I currently spend around $500-$700 on groceries every month. And in our situation right now (which I’ll reveal on the blog soon, I promise – it’s good, not bad!!) we need to cut costs.

I’ll deal with the hair salon sitch later, but for now, my goal is to slash our grocery bill by $500. This means spending a mere $200 on groceries per month, or $50 per week. I can do this. It might mean no more fancy pants Coconut milks, Kombucha’s (however I will spend extra money on kombuchas – like the bunco money I won. I just really believe in the healing power of Kombucha,) Barney Butters or goat’s milk ice cream, but I can do it. Basically I have to rule out two of my favorite stores (Naturally Yours and Fresh Market) and only go to them when I NEED an ingredient for something, like spelt flour for baking, for example.

So to put it in writing, and make it official…

In order to spend less at the food stores, I’m going to:

  • Shop at cheaper/bulk stores (as much as it pains me) like Wal-Mart, Sam’s, and Aldi’s.
  • Look for coupons – but only for things I need.
  • Take a list, and stick to the list
  • Compare prices
  • Buy store-brand when it’s a better deal
  • Buy in bulk when it comes to things like frozen goods, cereal, and of course – spinach.

Today’s my first go at it, actually. After training clients, I’m heading to the store, with a $50 limit. I’ll report back how it goes 😉

Adventures in Long Fridays

Ahhhh. Coffee.

Good morning! Have a good Friday night? I sure hope so! I had a wild night in watching 24 with the husband 😉 But I can justify my granniness this time! I had a LONG day yesterday, and have quite and early and busy one today.

Yesterday morning started out well and good with a 20 minute ellip sesh and 20 minute power yoga sesh with Mr. Farmar. Honestly, I just wanted to get a little more sleep, so I planned a nice and easy workout I could do at the crib.

Before leaving for work, I had an all right bowl of stovetop oatmeal:

Wish I could say it was delish, but for some reason, it was just a’ight. A little too watery. I know I’m in the minority, but I almost like microwaved oats better!


Worked the morning away until around lunch time, when I slipped out and dropped off some paperwork, and nommed on this delicious wrap:

So yummy. I ate half with lunch, and then the other half before I left work for a training appt.

After the work day ended, I headed straight to job numero dos to meet a potential client for a consultation. She ended up signing! woo hoo!! :D 

Even though it was 6:00 by now, I had to get some necessary groceries, so I stopped by the health food store since I was already oot and aboot.

Organic deodorant…
I wish I had the budget to get all things organic and natural, but I don’t, so I’m trying to just narrow it down to a few select products. I chose deodorant to be on this list for the simple reason that deodorant on my body all day. I don’t care so much that my face or body wash is organic/natural because I wash it off right away, but products such as deodorant, lip balm, lotion etc. that stay on the body all day have time to seep into the skin. I have no idea how valid this thought is, but it makes sense to me. Thinking about doing a post on its own about it soon 🙂 But I digress…

After putting away the groceries, I made my dinner!

I had Shane bake an acorn squash while I was out, and when I got home, I cooked up some black beans in a tamari+rice vinegar+maple syrup sauce and poured it in the acorn squash "bowl." Such a good combination. I have it often, I know, but I lurve it!

And of course I busted into my new bottle of wine:

I completely forgot that PureVia had offered to send me some of their natural sweetner! I really just add stevia to my oatmeal anymore, so I’ll have a review of that to come, plus I’ll get the hubski’s take on it in his coffee (he’s a sweet and low guy…blech!)

Finally, around 8:00, it was relaxation time, and shortly after, fall asleep on the couch time 😉

Got a busy one today, too! About to be off to the gym for a training appointment, then meeting a friend for our long run (7 miles,) and then getting my hurr did! Not sure what I’ll do…maybe lighten it up? Probably nothing too drastic, but who knows, the long run might make me volatile!

Green Intentions

I started today out the only way I know how…with a cup of French Press coffee!

Mmm. I’m really getting used to the whole using no sweetener in my coffee thing. Dare I say it helps me feel better in the morning, too? I get the caffeine buzz without the sweetener buzz, which is a good thing in my book.

 

I followed up the coffee with a delicious juice from our Christmas juicer:

Carrot, celery, grapefruit juice. Yuuuumtopia!

Look at all the pulp it produces from that one cup of juice, though:

Yeah…that’s why I mainly like to EAT my fruits – look at all that fiber I’m missing out on. Oh well, juicing is FUN and surrre is tasty 😀

Then I was off to work!

Work was another busy day spend mostly at my desk, but then around lunch time, I snuck across the street to my stylist to get my eye brows waxed. Am I the only one who actually likes this feeling? I really don’t think it hurts at all – but instead that it feels good! I know, I’m special. Haha

I couldn’t help but pass a Starbucks on my way back to work, so the centrifugal force pulled me in. Besides, I wanted to put my reusable eco cup I got for Christmas to use!

Yay Green!

Except I didn’t even end up being green. I gave my cup to the barista just as he was about to write my order on the paper cup. Then, when he took my reusable cup, he totally turned around and through the paper cup in the garbage! So much for trying to be green! Oh well, I tried to spare that one cup, right? At least I saved the earth from a plastic lid? Haha Oh well – next time I’ll be quicker 😉

Either way, my grande soy half pump vanilla latte (no way I’m totally skipping sweetener in this bad boy) was spectacularrrr– and put me in a happy place for when I got back to work 🙂

After eating my lunch at my desk, and working on a couple other items, I decided I needed a break, and hoofed it up to the top floor to park it and work at a desk right by the window. Killing two birds with one seat, I got a TON of work done and got in a lil Vitamin D while I was at it. When working inside all day, in a cubicle, it can be tough to get your daily dose of sunshine.

Left work a little late to finish up on some scheduling and made a quick stop at the grocery store to fill up my fruit basket and my veggie drawer.

Do you know how much I love Aldi’s? I typically hit up expensive health food stores, spending more than I need, but this month the husband and I are doing a little challenge to see how much money we can save on food by having me not buy unnecessary expensive items from health food stores. I’m sure I’ll stop by there once or twice to pick up some spelt flour or kombucha, but for the majority of this month (and probably months to come, seeing as how Aldi’s is bomb) I’m stickin’ to Aldi’s and Wal-Mart.

Besides, I was chattin’ it up with my girl, Destiny, about Aldi’s and she told I have got to try their Winking Owl wine. Supposedly it’s like $3 and tastes amazing and doesn’t leave a hangover. Needless to say, I was super amped to see this magical wine to my right upon first entering the store:

Anyway, from Aldi’s, I drove to a Power Yoga class 😀

It was an intense class with lots of vinyasas. I really wish they held this class more than once a week. Well, actually they do, but they need to reschedule it to fit MY schedule 😉

When class ended, I went downstairs to the gym to get in a smidgen of cardio, before gallivanting home around 7:00

Famished as I was, my stankiness from the gym somehow outweighed my hunger. One Godspeed shower later and I was ready for dinner.

I knew the amount of effort I wanted to put into dinner was slim to none. So you know what that means…

It was a spinach pizza, but I added some bok choy for a little extra umph.

Popped it in the oven and devoured the first snack in sight patiently waited for it to cook.

Ahhhh. SO good. And the stats are pretty amazing too! Not too many ingredients, mostly organic. And the cheese was feta and tofu. (I didn’t mention the scary “t word” when the hubski snagged a piece of it…muahaha)

Tomorrow’s going to be a busy one. I get off work at 10:30, but I have a fullll day of personal business errands to run. The reward for such productivity? A full body massage at the end of the day from my friend who’s a massage therapist. Score!! :D     

 

Just had to add one more thing – Relief efforts are making it as easy as ever to do your part in helping Haiti through it’s time of devastation and destruction. How amazing is it that you can donate $10 just be sending a text message? Yep, all you have to do is send the message “Haiti” to the number 90999 and you will have donated $10 minutes, and it will only have taken 2 minutes of your time. If you can’t donate $10, there are many other ways you can donate to the Haiti Earthquake victims.

How “green” are you? Do you change anything up to try and be more environmentally friendly? Aside from the whole reusable coffee cup thang obviously, I also try and recycle as much as I can, unplug large appliances when they’re not in use, and use reusable grocery bags. I know that’s not much, but it’s more than I did a year or so ago!

Santa Left me Something Extra

Good morning, lovlies! Are we all recuperated from this weekend? I am well on my way!

I am currently sipping on some Kona coffee (Fresh Market’s is best) and mentally preparing myself for a kick butt workout. I actually had grand plans of going to the gym upon waking, but my plans were deterred when I got up and saw this outside my window:

Yeah… I don’t think they’d cancel work over it, but I’m sure as heck not going to voluntarily trudge through that! This snow storm started yesterday morning! The weatherman must not have gotten the memo that we were all dreaming of a white Christmas, not day-after-Christmas. It is quite pretty, though, no? Needless to say, I’ll be working out here in our “home gym” this morning. 🙂

Thankfully, the roads weren’t too bad during the day yesterday, and I was able to hit up the gym for an hour long yoga session followed by a 20 minute incline walk on the treadmill. I’m now keeping track of my daily workouts in a table located in the fitness tab of the bloggy if you ever care for some workout inspiration!

Oh, and PS…another blender took a poo. It’s last day on the counter was 12/24/09. It’s now been replaced by this 1990’s blender my parents’ haven’t used in years and were so kind enough to loan me until it calls it quits:

After the gym, I made the obligatory weekend stop at Naturally Yours, and was absolutely delighted to find yet another foodie unicorn!

All essentials. I was excited to try out some Millet bread that the Fitnessista has been raving about over on her blog lately. Since my stomach was eating my back bone by this time, I decided it’d be a great time to test it out!

I toasted a piece of the Millet bread (omg…fabulous tasting) and one piece of cinnamon raisin Ezekiel bread, and spread on a little Original Earth Balace, and then sprinkled the PB2 on half of each piece – didn’t want the whole thing to go to waste incase it was major suckage.

The verdict? PB2 is just kinda “meh” when sprinkled on toast. I think it’d be better stirred into something…like oatmeal…mmm. Does anyone have any suggestions on how you like it best?

The rest of the afternoon, the husband and I ran errands around town…in a blizzard. Oh, this is a good time to point something out to you guys. Since it was snowing, I wanted to wear boots + skinny jeans:

Now if you look closely, you’ll see those aren’t skinny jeans at all, but instead Lululemon charcoal Under Wunder tights. You see, Santa left some extra weight in my stockings!! I put on my skinny jeans, and was able to button them, but then had to do the just-washed-and-dried-jeans-dance, and I hadn’t even washed them! So instead of feeling like suffocating all day, I slipped on these cop out skinny jeans, and felt much better.

And you know what? I don’t even mind the extra weight. I didn’t freak out at all. Moreover, Shane has told me multiple times how he likes me better with a few extra LB’s – he likes the curves, and I do too! Unfortunately, all of my jeans like me at my happy-weight – the weight I stay at with my normal diet and exercise. However, all would be good if I could just wear my lulu’s all day every day! haha …Man that really would be great, wouldn’t it? Just sayin’…

Anyway, we were on a mission to replace the rug in our living room. We went to several different places, when we finally got a replacement of the exact same one we had before at Target. Hey, it works!

Since our plans for the night was watching a movie in the theatre downstairs, I took full advantage of the popcorn machine I got for my wedding shower last year:

This weekend has just been so fabulous, I wish it’d never end!!!

Veggies Give you Wings!

Happy Friday, Bloggy Friends!! 😀 My Friday has buzzed by, as it always does, but I’ve got a lot done so far.

Lately I’ve been noticing I haven’t been getting as many veggies in my diet as I should be, so I’m making eating vegetables a priority. Additionally, I feel as though I get way too much sugar in my daily diet. If you take a look at a typical day of eats, nearly all of my snacks are sweet rather than savory, same with breakfast, and most of the time with lunch. If I incoporate more veggies, I’ll bet it will make my sugar stats plummet:) And I really think having too much sugar yesterday made my run go to the pot. Although, I bet if anyone could sweeten up veggies, it’d be me. Mmm carrot cake anyone? Kidding, kidding 😉

With that said, I woke up today and made a delicious green monster!!

It contained:

  • spinach
  • Greens + Superfood
  • 1 organic carrot
  • half a frozen banana
  • ice, water

It was scrumptious! I found this combination staved off my hunger longer than my typical green monsters do for some reason. I didn’t even mosey on over to the cafeteria at work until 8:30! Usually I’m there and eating by 7:30 😀

And instead of my usual sweet bowl of cereal or oats, I opted for a veggie omelet!

Along side was a piece of whole wheat toast with strawberry preserves.

The omelet was made with All-Eggs, mushrooms, onions, tomatos, green pepper and cheese. It was sooo good, and whatdya know? Kept me fuller longer!

I did end up having a snack around 10:45 before I left for the day. I had a facial afterward, and didn’t want my tummy grumbling while I was trying to pass out relax. So I had a bowl of 0% fage with blueberries, and a vitamuffin top!

I used this Vita Top, which was SO much better than the chocolate peanut butter fudge one I had yesterday.

I really, really liked this flavor. Hopefully I can find them somewhere around here soon!!

My facial was amaaazing. It was an Aveda Relaxing Facial, and my salon has a special on them this month by giving their customers %20 off. Since I can’t refuse a bargain, when my hair stylist asked me, I said, “signb me up!” It was pretty much the shiz. Afterward, I took my clean (and bare) face to Fresh Market to get next week’s groceries:

I’ve done a total 180 on saying I wouldn’t buy produce here. It really isn’t more expensive, and it’s SO fresh, and doesn’t all come from Mexico.

Then I had to make a pit-stop at Kroger to get a couple staple items that I knew for sure would be more expensive at FM, like zip lock bags and a couple other items.

Continuing my quest for increasing my veggie quota, I set out to make a veggie-filled lunch.

It started with some homemade hummus, layered with spinach and tomatoes, sprouts, cucumbers, and avocado:


In a wrap, of course!

It was a wee too big for the wrap, but don’t you worry, I managed just fine 😉

Along side was a sliced Pink Lady apple with some Barney Butter:


But the Barney Butter wasn’t what I chose at first. I was going to eat the Cinnamon Swirl Peanut Butter first:

But…The Barney Butter had 6 less grams of sugar, so I opted for that. Plus, with apples, you really don’t need flavored nut butters in my opinion.

Don’t worry, I’m not going to become some sugar gram counting freak 😉 I’ve just noticed it’s something I need to pay attention to a little more, and if it’s affecting my running and energy levels, it needs to be a priority.

Speaking of running, I’m so pumped for my race tomorrow morning!! My dad’s going to be in Morton tonight, so he’s picking my packet up for me and meeting me at the race tomorrow. I have an all out fan club that will be rooting me on! My mom, dad, hubski, BFF, and BFF’s mom are coming. And, the race is at 7:30 a.m!! These are some pretty special people I have in my life 😉

Tonight I’m going out to dinner with thte girls for one their birthdays at a place called, Biaggi’s, then I’m coming straight home to prep for the morning, so there might not be another post before the race. We’ll see though – I love writing out all my thoughts and nerves to you guys before a good race!!

Running Around Crazy?

Hi all! Sorry for the random posting times today. I’ve been running around like a crazy woman every since I hopped out of bed an hour late this morning.

After I got off of work at 11:00, I came straight home, and got Niko ready to go to the groomers. She always goes to the groomers on Bunco night; that’s how I keep track:D haha. While home, I made a quick half a tuna salad pita sandwich and ate it before I left.


It had tuna, mustard, onion, and chick peas. I toasted the pita before topping it with the tuna salad and it was very delish. This was followed by a super-charge me cookie.

Poor Niko knew she was going to the groomers. Once we got close, she started shaking a little. However, she was a very pretty lady when she was all done.


Isn’t she purty? They forgot to put a bandana on her this time though 😦

While Niko was getting prettified, I was running around like a crazy woman. Hmm…Running Around Crazy?

First, I went to the gym and did some abs work. I did planks, side planks, inverted crunches, bicycle crunches. After abs, I ran four miles on the treadmill. It felt so nice!

Stats:

Total time: 37:30, which averaged out to be about a 9:37 pace I think?
Max HR: 180 (I played with some hill work)
Avg HR: 164
Cals burned: 445

Woo! Felt great. I’m making myself wakeup early enough on Sunday to run outside, though. I like outdoor running so much better than on the dreadmill. After the gym, I hit up a couple grocery stores and my favorite Pet store in town. While driving, I snacked on some Sahale PBJ flavored almonds.


They were OK. A little artificial tasting to be honest.

But look at my grocery haul!!

Then I had to put them all away. Boo.

When I finally arrived home, I had to act quick to make snacks for Bunco. I made three dishes.

Dish #1 was dark chocolate chip banana bread:

It turned out SO good and SO yummy. It was a huge hit! 😀 I saved half for home because I liked it that much!
Dish #2 was a recipe from Yoga is Yummy. They’re little coconut balls made with almonds, dates, coconut, cocoa powder, and agave.


So simple, yet SO delicious.
Dish #3 was guacamole, which is one of my staple people pleasers if you haven’t noticed:

Alas, my baked goods didn’t bring me much luck tonight. I didn’t win any money again! Of course, everyone wins because we all get to hang out and enjoy each others company 😀

Shane and I are headed over to a Cubs game tomorrow, so that should an great time! I’m sure I’ll be packing up some of these leftovers for game snacks! Those hot dogs and nachos are killer. Let’s hope the Cubs kick some Pirate butt!! (Sorry Pittsburgh peeps)

Mine is M-Th: 7-4:30, and Fri: 7-11:00. I’d say that’s pretty close to ideal for me, but I could always work less;)

I Lost my Indian Food Virginity

I finally tried it! After months and months of saying, “ummm no thanks, it smells gross!” I finally ended my stubbornness and gave it whirl. Now I can’t believe I haven’t had it in my life sooner! I couldn’t believe how awesome it was!

First of all, thanks for those who responded in suggestions of what I should order 😀 Shane and I ended up sampling off of each others dishes, and we also got an appetizer, which was Chicken Tandoori.


NOM. OK, I probably wouldn’t get this again, just because it was so heavily fried, but who knew little chicken nugget type things could be so delectable?!

For our meals, Shane got chile chicken, which was a wee bit too spicy for my taste. I swear, this man likes it as spicy as it gets. I opted for the Chicken Tika Masala (I think??) Oh man…I could have had 2 servings of this goodness on a plate.

It was chicken, green bell pepper, and onion in a creamy tomato sauce – sweet, but somewhat spicy. We also got 2 servings each of naan. Shane got the garlic kind, and I got regular, because that’s what our waiter said would go best with my dish.

Either way, I’m hooked! We both ate a ton too, since we worked up such an appetite running around all day. We were both going non-stop since about 5:30 this morning. Shane as a cleaning machine!

After my run today, while Shane was cleaning the whole house (back burner chores turned into a whole spring cleaning day,) I was out running errands. We’re organizing our storage room, so Shane had me go to (the dreaded) Wal-Mart to get 9 big storage bins. I got those, but somehow all this managed to jump in my cart.


I also manage to leave an Operation Beautiful note by the storage bins. Hopefully it made someone smile! 😀

Mmm…I love that Dark Chocolate Dreams nut butter pictured above. So much that I didn’t realize I already have one open and one not yet opened container of it in the pantry already. Oops!! Naturally, I had to give the opened one a little help by making this as a snack.

Now it only has about a tbs left. I think I know what my breakfast will be tomorrow. Oatmeal in a nutbutter container, anyone? 🙂

I also had to stop at the local running store here in town to pick up some socks. During my run today, I started to feel a blister coming on my left foot. I knew I had to do something about that stat. Hopefully these guys do the trick.

If they don’t, I guess I’ll be picking up some moleskin.

When I got home, I joined Shane on his cleaning frenzy, and did the bathrooms and floors. The house was absolutely shining when we finished – such a GOOD feeling.

To reward ourselves, I made a cocktail that’s a staple in my family’s beverages:

A vodka gimlet! Niko wanted some, but I didn’t let her have any, because she’s even more of a light weight than I am 😛 It’s definitely a sipper drink. After drinks and showers, we headed to the Indian restaurant, and well – you know the rest from there 😉

Tomorrow I’m waking up bright and early for some light cardio at the gym and then some strength-training, focusing on my “pull muscles.” Then it’s off to the Farmer’s Market with my good friend Carmody!
