A New Man in My Life

His name is Jim. I mean Gym.

What to do when you can’t do your favorite form of exercise? Immerse yourself in something else!

This morning I went back to someone I walked away from at the beginning of this year. I walked away because of the “it’s-not-you-it’s me reasons.”

  • I just can’t afford you
  • I have another one in my life
  • I need start experiencing other venues of exercise
  • Spring was coming, and I’d be outdoors so much of my time anyway.

I walked away from the gym a few months after I started personal training at my current gym. I get a free membership there, and the husband and I were on a budget then, so the smartest thing was to walk away from the $45 monthly payments for an additional gym membership. But this also meant walking away from my favorite power yoga class and teacher, walking away from Les Mills classes, and working out with my bestie in the mornings before work.

In my case, an injury is keeping me from my favorite form of exercise. The tightness in the hip and the pain in my faschia isn’t going to go away without cross training. And to combat that, I’m going to immerse myself in classes! I’ve been planning to decrease my mileage after the next two races anyway, and to fill the void, I plan on taking spin classes and go back to my beloved power yoga class. I was able to negotiate a lower rate and skip the the sign on fee!! Hooray 🙂

It lessens the blow just a bit 😉

After signing up and getting in a good sweat session on the bike and iron session in the weight room, I came back home and did another thing I haven’t done in a loong time.

I juiced UP!

love, love, love fresh juices, but the juicer is so bulky and messy that I rarely get it out!

Laziness trumps awesome healing enzymes apparently.

Today’s combination was leftover apple peelings from this weekend’s apple pie, one beet, two carrots, and some cherry juice.

When I do finally decide to make it, it’s worth it..

almost;)

Have a lovely Tuesday, friends!! 🙂

Are you an exercise class type person? What class is your favorite? I love a good spin class, but I also love classes like body pump.

Fun Run Friday

Happy Friday! Was it really a week ago that I was fumbling my way around the El into Chicago to go to the Healthy Living Summit? It feels like I got back yesterday…

This morning I woke up not really sure what I’d do for my workout. I’m sure you’ve noticed, I’m a work out in the morning type of gal. I only like to shower once a day, and working out in the morning works out (ha) well with that preference. I knew I wanted to run, but an easy run, and I knew I wanted to lift weights.

So I channeled my mother, who does what I did this morning nearly every day. I ran the two miles and change to my gym, did the following tri-sets:

Single point row 20 lb dumbbells, 10 reps
Cable fly 12.5 lbs, 10 reps
Deadlift Olympic bar + 5 lb. plates, 10 reps

Repeat 3x’s

Weighted calf raise on box 25 lb. plate in each hand, 15 reps
Overhead cable extension 25 lbs, 10 reps
Stiff-leg deadlift olympic bar + 10 lb plates, 12 reps

Repeat 3 x’s

Then I used the bathroom and grabbed another drink and ran back home! It was an awesome way to change it up. I think I might start implementing this more Fridays 🙂 A fun Friday workout 🙂

I was starving when I got home. Running + weights = one hangry Paige.

But breakfast was oh-so-worth the weight.

I layered banana protein oatmeal with yogurt in an oversized wine glass, with a little bit of Trader Joe’s Flax seed almond butter and granola on top.

IMG_9046

It was so delicious it inspired some creative photography.

IMG_9053 IMG_9054

Orrr just taking a picture of it through the glass table, haha

n00bies!

I wanted to take a minute and talk about some new products I’m loving right now.

Note: I bought each of these with my money; Flat Out or Laughing Cow is not compensating me for the reviews below

I was at Kroger the other day, when I walked past the deli section and did a double take:

IMG_9004

Flat Out bread pita chips?! Why haven’t I heard of these? Have you guys tried them before?

IMG_9005

If not, I recommend you go to your nearest grocer, and pick yourself up a bag.

IMG_9007

With hummus, these chips give Stacy’s a run for their money. Oh, yes.

The same thing happened while at Trader Joe’s the other day. Now, I’ve had the Laughing Cow cheese wedges before, and they’re great – individual little wedges that are great for being on the go.

IMG_9041

Wait, what? Blue cheese?! Why are these secrets being kept from me? I love love love blue cheese. It’s one of my favorite cheeses! Honestly, I really don’t eat much cheese anymore, but when I saw this, I had to make it mine.

IMG_9042

Used as a condiment in a veggie sandwich, it worked perfectly!

Again, neither of these companies are paying/compensating me for these reviews – I just had to share the wealth!

Well I’m off to get some laundry done. Being away for a weekend and then having a super busy week resulted in a full day’s worth of laundry for me. It actually needed to be done earlier than today, alas, it waited for me. Laundy’s nice like that 😉 Then I think a nice, relaxing night is in store tonight:)

Ciao!

Which new (to you) foods are you loving lately?

Keepin’ it Cool

Morrrnin’!

How we all doin’ today? If you’re reading this, you’ve gotten through another Monday; Congrats 😀 I had a looong one yesterday that spanned from 7:30 a.m.-8:30 p.m. And today looks the exact same, but hey I’m keepin’ it cool😉

I switched it up this morning for breakfast and busted out this bad boy that’s been keepin’ it cool in the fridge all night:

IMG_6285

Oats, chia seeds, maca, 1/2 scoop Jay Robb brown rice pp, half a banana, 1.5 T. almond butter, 1/8 c. almond milk. I added the golden raisins (obsessed!!!) this morning!

IMG_6284

With a cup of coffee, of course.

The coffee was leftover from earlier this morning. I’ve convinced myself that I NEED a cup of it before my morning workout. So when the alarm went off at 4:50 this morning, I made some French Press, poured it in the to-go cup, and chugged sipped it on my 5 minute drive to the gym. I was running a little late this morning, and only had 50 minutes at the gym, so my coffee was still warm when I got back to my car:)

At the (uberly hot and humid) gym, I did running intervals! I was too asleep to make it anything too specific, but I basically jogged at 6.1 for 90 seconds, then ran at 6.6-6.7 for 90 seconds, until 45 minutes was up. The end! Hoping to get a lower body workout in between clients tonight:D

Some of yesterday’s meals on the go:

IMG_6273

Hummus, spinach, tempe, and cuke wrap w/ a plum

 IMG_6275

Looks meaty. Eek!

It’s my dinner in a box!

IMG_6276

Plus a simple salad of romaine + Goddess dressing.

IMG_6280

On the go, fo sho.

IMG_6277

This is two servings?!

IMG_6278 Really?!

IMG_6279

Really.

It was a fantabulous frozen dinner, though, and I recommend it to you guys!

Since I got home late, I needed something to calm the nerves and shut me down:IMG_6282

Usually works every time. Not this time. I tossed and turned for an hour or so! At least when I did get to sleep, I slept like a rock! Gotta love that:D

Well I’m off to work! Keep it cool, everyone!

Are you a member of your gym? Has it gotten unbearable hot and humid in it the last few days? I know it’s only April, but it’s SO warm and sticky outside (which is fine) and inside the gym (which is not fine.) I needed double the water I had!

Breaking Up with Your Gym

Hey peeps! How’s your Tuesday treatin’ ya? Well I hope:) Mine’s goin’ just fiiiine. But to interrupt my regular blogging schedule of live>recap>live>recap, I bring to you a thought that’s been weighing (heh) on my mind the past couple days!

Breaking up is Hard to Do

1_gymempty

Even when it’s with your gym!

In April of 2009, my friend, Heidi, had convinced me to come with her to the gym where she belonged and get a free two-week guest pass. I think we’ve all been here. Whether we’re seriously contemplating joining or just going along for the free ride, it’s hard to turn down a FREE pass, right??

It had been almost 5 months since I quit my 4-year long membership at Gold’s gym, and I was flirting with the idea of joining another gym. I had quit Gold’s because that Christmas I had gotten an elliptical, I had a full set of weights, countless DVD’s, yoga mat, the great outdoors, etc. Plus, Gold’s was too crowded and I didn’t ever feel 100% comfortable there. And they had NO sense of temperature control (NOT cool in mid July or mid January!)

So I joined Heidi in countless Les Mills classes and cardio sessions during those two weeks, and at the end, all the sudden I was signing a contract agreeing that I could work out at the Workout Company if they could siphon take $45 out of my bank account each month. Done deal.

This was right around the time I started the couch to 5K plan, so a treadmill was very handy. Since that day, I’ve gone to the gym an average of 4-5 times each week (providing for a couple days a week for outdoor runs and home elliptical sessions) and have loved it! I’ve felt a real sense of “belonging.” The staff is super friendly, and always calls their members by name, and I’ve come to build relationships with instructors and other class-goers. And of course, it’s great having one of my best friends to meet me at the gym. Hello work out buddy!! I love working out with friends every now and then. Working out a lone has its perks, especially when it comes to hard core training, but a friend by your side can make a lack luster work out that much better 😀

Fast forward 10 months, to when I got hired as a trainer at a different gym. The husband and I both agreed that it makes sense for me to quit my membership at The Workout Company since I could now go to a gym for free. I mean, we’re trying to save money, and that’s an easy way, right? Well it’s not that easy!

Breaking up is hard to do! Especially when it’s a case of “it’s not you, it’s me!” (This was not the case with Gold’s. Gold’s, it was partly you.) I love that gym, the sense of community, the power yoga class held in the loft area, and mostly, that I get to work out with one of my BFF’s! Heidi not only just got back to working out after having a baby, but she is also just starting the Couch 2 5K plan! I’m super pumped about helping her out with this. After all, it’s what launched me into my love for running 😀 But, it’s just financially logical to save the extra $45 a month. This morning I broke the news to Heidi, and she was less than pleased. In fact, she’s still trying to get me to change my mind!

I realize this post might sound a bit melodramatic, but when you spend 6 hours a week at one place, you can get a little attached. It’s not just leaving a place with workout equipment, but it’s leaving a community! It’s like leaving a job where you really like your co-workers or the work you do.

Have you ever broken up with your gym before?

What was the most emotional situation you’ve been in when “breaking up” with an inanimate object or place (work, a gym, a class, etc)?

Some Call Me Crazy…

I just say I’m running around normal…

Good morning everyone! I’m up bright and early because I met my friend, Heidi, at the gym at 4:45 this morning. What? You didn’t know I was crazy? Apparently I am. Heidi’s even more crazy though, because she does this just about every day!

Once I got to the gym, I did a 3.5 mile run. I still had a few minutes, so I jumped on the elliptical for a few and then hightailed it home at about 5:35. Luckily traffic’s nil at this time of night this early in the morning, so it didn’t take me but 10 minutes to get home.

Fortunately, I went to bed around 9:15 last night, so I still got in a good amount of sleep 🙂

For dinner last night, Shane and I said screw cooking, and we popped in a frozen pizza. We’d both been cleaning up after our animals for a couple hours after we got off work, and the last thing we felt like doing was making a mess in our kitchen again by cooking.

So we had a chicken supreme pizza, and while the pizza was cooking I has some Mary’s Crackers with hummus.

Can you guess which side is mine?

I added some spinach and a portabello shroom. It was SO good. I actually wanted MOAR when I finished my half. Too bad Shane felt the same way, so there was none left. However, I had a better plan.

Alas, the post-dinner froyo! I convinced Shane to get us some dessert (this did not take much convincing – he wanted it as much as I did! hehe)

I forgoed my usual tropical swirly and went with a small blackberry with raspberries on top.

It was just what I needed 😀

The rest of the night involved a Glamour magazine, and being horizontal on the couch with the fam.

Question: What’s the earliest you’ve ever woken up to workout before work?

And just a heads up: This afternoon’s post is on a very controversial topic, so make sure to stop by and let me know your opinion!

I’ll take that in moderation, please!

I was just about to leave the gym after a good sweat session, when something at the front desk caught my eye. My gym always has fliers with studies or fun factoids on them, and when I saw this one, I new I had to do a post on it.

It read, in big, bold letters across the top:

10 Foods You Should Never Eat!

Now, I ‘m all about moderation, so this headline kind of peeved me. Most of the foods on there, I agreed, were pretty bad, and most of them I don’t even want to eat. However, a couple surprised me. Especially #1

Ok, so here were their 10 Foods You Should Never Eat!

10. Contadina Alfredo Sauce – Basically they say this contains way too much butter

9. Rice-A-Roni Chicken & Vegetables – What’s bad about this one? You guessed it. Sodium galore.

8. Campbell’s red-and-white-label soups – Now this one surprised me. I know it has a butt-load of sodium, but listing it as a ixnayed food surprised me.

7. Haagen Dazs Ice Cream – This one surprised me, too. I wasn’t aware that it had 46 grams of fat – as much as 3 quarter pounders. I wonder how many fat grams the new 5 ingredient conatiners have in them….

6. Oscar Mayer Lunchables – This one doesn’t need an explanation, right?

5. Frito-Lay’s Wow Potato Chips – While they’re fat free, they’re fried in Olean, an indigestable fat substitute. Mmm mm mm! Who wouldn’t want something fried in an ingredient that can cause cramps or diarrhea!?

4. Nissin Cup Noodles with Shrimp – Pre-fried and salted and contain the bad oils

3. Entenmann’s Rich Frosted Donuts – what? not on the good food list? 😛

2. Gwaltney Great Dog Frankfurters – This “healthy alternative” packs in 10 or 11 grams of fat each.

1. Quaker 100% Natural Oats & Honey Granola – Now, this one surprised me very much so. Ok, ok, so it has a lot of sugar and fat, but the #1 food you should never eat?? hmm..

I just thought I’d share this because again, in my personal opinion, no foods should absolutely off limits, and some of the foods on there surprised me! I sure could think of some to add/substitute. The actual study was done by the Center for Science in the Public Interest.

Do you think there are certain foods you should never eat?

Ok, now off to finish my green monster, which today contains:
a carrot
2 c. spinach
1 peach
1 nectarine
1 frzn banana
1c. organic skim milk
1/2 scoop of vanilla pp
1 tbs of ground flax

Mmmm mmm 😛
(I didn’t see this on the naughty list 😛 ) and head to work!

Happy Hump Day, Bloggers!

Niko’s New Do’

Niko’s sportin’ her new summer do’ now. They almost buzzed her! She still looks cute as cake though, and I think she likes it better. It’s much more apropriate for summer. It almost makes her look like a little kindergartner with a bob on the first day of school! (Insert jokes here, I know I’m a crazy Niko mom)

So, bunco was a lot of fun last night! And the hostess brought a wonderful variety of food. She brought some veggies and hummus over, and I think I alone ate half the tub! woops…
Unfortunately I didn’t win any money, but hey, what’s new :-p Those girls crack me up. I love em all, and I’m so lucky to have them as my friends!

When I got home, it was pretty late, so I didn’t feel like fixing up a plate of the crock pot dinner, so I just watched some triple D and went to bed. Naturally, this morning I woke up starved! I usually don’t eat before I run in the morning, but today I figured it would help get me through it. A banana and almond butter should do the trick.

It did! I’ll probably have another attempt at a smoothie when I get back. Today’s long run today. For me, long run day consists of 4.5 miles. Yipes! I’m still trying to decide if I should run inside or outside though. They’re predicting rain, but the rain hasn’t started yet. Plus, I haven’t been to my gym since Wednesday! All of my workouts have been outside on the pavement or in my own home with weights and elliptical.

Which do you prefer? Running inside or outside?

Hope you all had a good Friday!
