It Happened…

It happened. Last night, around 7:30 pm, the inevitable came true. It snowed. OK, maybe flurried is a better word, but still!! The wet rain transformed into solid drops, and it happened. And I was just warming up (ha) to the idea of fall!!!

And I’m not the only one who’s not a fan of the cold, wet, snow you know.

What the bark, mom?! It’s barking cold out there!

So that picture was from last winter, but ya get the point 😉 You’d think after 25 years of living in the Midwest you’d get used to it by now, right? I’m still waiting for that to happen.

One thing frigid temps are good for? Nice, hot, comforting breakfasts🙂 After I got back from training a client in the wee hours this morning, I wanted nothing but a hot breakfast to warm my soul. Waffles sounded nice, actually, but I needed to keep it a little lighter than waffles.

Hot spiced oatmeal in a Jif jar? Don’t mind if I do!

On top there? That’s my newest oatmeal topping obsession – Greek yogurt mixed with a bit of pumpkin butter. Unbelievable!

I had to keep it light because after I finish this post, I’m off to a spin class at my new old gym! I’m pretty amped up about this class. The energy is pretty intense from what I remember, and it’s a blast! And it’s inside 😉

Luckily, the temps are supposed to warm back up this weekend, though, so hopefully tomorrow I can get in a run (maybe? provided body parts cooperate with me?!) 🙂

That said, I have to tell you guys something.

I’m sure you’ve guessed by now, but I won’t be running in this weekend’s Hot Chocolate 15k.

Ouch. It hurt to write that 😦

I won’t be running for several reasons:

Number 1. My heel/arch of my left foot hates me.

Number 2. My right hip hates me too

Number 3. My cousin, who I was going to run it with, had to back out because of family obligations.

Number 4. One of my best friends is hosting a benefit for her mom because she has breast cancer, and there’s no way in hell that I’ll miss it.

So there. Call me a quitter, or not. I figured four reasons telling me not to drive to Chicago and run this race is a pretty big sign that I should cut my losses and fold my cards. So instead of wallowing, I’ll be proud of my decision, and proud of friends who are running the race, too! You girls have FUN! And good luck. Sorry I won’t be able to meet up…

Onward and upward -  I’m off to spin it out! Watch out nah!

Does it snow where you live? When do you usually have the first snow? There was no accumulation or anything last night, so I’m not sure if we Illinoisans can call it the “first snow.” Usually our first big snow happens in late November or early December!

Best Decision All Week

Hey guys! Have a good Tuesday? For being such a long day, it went by extremely quick. I’m not quite sure what happened to my afternoon post yesterday, but it’s somewhere…out there…and it’s about needing coffee in a bad way and pumpkin rice pudding!

This morning I made the best decision I’ve made all week. My alarm went off at 4:45 a.m. as planned so I could bounce on over to the gym and get in a 45 minute tempo run before working at the BIC. I got up, immediately put on running clothes:

face showing is not allowed before 6 a.m. – fyi 😉

and even went so far as to pour a cup of coffee. But then I did a body check. I was really tired. And not the usual “ugh it’s 5:00 in the morning tired,” but the “your body definitely needed more time to recharge tired.” So I put down the cup of coffee, told my husband to try to be quiet, and I got back in bed –donning my running clothes – and snuggled with Niko for another hour.

Definitely the best decision I’ve made all week. Now instead of rushing around this morning trying to get from the gym to the shower to breakfast to work, I’m leisurely eating a hot, delicious bowl of oats.

And my run will just have to wait until tonight. Nothing wrong with that.

OK. Who am I kidding…I’m still late. It wouldn’t be me if I weren’t! 😉

Gotta go! 🙂 See you this afternoon with a back to basics workout – and how I made spaghetti simple and fancy for dinner last night!

Is it hard for you to tell the difference between laziness and actually truly needing that extra hour of sleep/rest? It’s hard to tell sometimes, but it’s usually mental if you’re just lacking motivation. If I really need the rest, my body tells me I do in the form of lethargy, moodiness, and even threatening to get sick! Learn to listen to yo bod!

Plantar Fasciitis: Pain and Prevention

Morning morning 🙂

I’m in a great mood because I finally got to sleep in past 5:00 a.m. In fact, I didn’t roll out of bed until nearly 6:00! Shortly after rolling out, I rolled on out the door for a quick paced 6 mile run. Nothing too extreme, but enough to finish feeling like I’d left a little bit of me out there on the pavement. It was a stellar run, partly due to some new jams courtesy of this little episode:

And I had this to look forward to:

A breakfast of champions!

Can we label this the fall breakfast trifecta? almond butter + pumpkin oats + a little topping a created with Greek yogurt, a little maple syrup reduction + figs!

On my run I only had minimal foot pain, too, so double bonus! Oh that’s right…I haven’t talked about my foot pain on the blog yet. Well guys, I think I have plantar fasciitis. Way back before the Healthy Living Summit, I started experiencing some shooting pain in my arches just when I got out of bed in the morning.

I didn’t really think anything except, really?! You start feeling the effects of aging at 25?! And brushed it off.

Then I went to the Healthy Living Summit in Chicago where I frolicked around the city in my cute but utterly uncomfortable black sandals.

Do I even have shoes on?! lol

Apparently, this isn’t good for plantar fasciitis and it sent my left arch into a tizzy.

And by tizzy, I mean having heel/arch spurs in the middle of the night and even throughout the day. I immediately went to my mom who used to be an avid runner (and now runs and walks) had plantar fasciitis when she ran a lot too – and did some of my own research- to find some ways to relieve the pain.

Her recs:

  • calf stretches – for both the gastrocnemius

and the soleus

(bend knee and stretch the calf)

  • quit sleeping on stomach. Sleeping on the stomach creates a plantar flexion in the foot which only aggravates the fasciitis. If you must sleep on your stomach, sleep so your foot hangs over the bed and can still be in a dorsiflexed position:

  • Wear shoes with sufficient arch support and cushion (refer back to the flip flop incident)

Goodbye trendy, hello arch relief. Dansko’s and Bornes will become your foot’s friend…

  • Massage, massage, massage

My mom bought me this little gadget, but a tennis ball will work too!

  • And lastly, I started wearing my orthodics again that my Dr. prescribed me LAST year when I had tendonitis. They’re cute. Let me tell you.

I know plantar fasciitis is pretty common among runners.

Have any of you dealt with this pesky ailment? Any additional tips?

Fill In The _______

Hi friends……happy FRIDAY! 😀

What a week! I think I deserve a

Last night after working the third day at the BIC & training clients, I did just that. It was the last (pumpkin) beer in the fridge (thankfully) I can’t wait to pick our and try out another this weekend!

For dinner last night, all I wanted was a bunch of:

I hadn’t had hardly any veggies all day (besides what was mixed in my black bean burger for lunch) and the craving was something:

(fierce, for you slow ones who haven’t had your

yet) 😉

The veggie craving was squashed after roasting and was eaten along side some almond butter encrusted sweet potato (yam?) fries!

I’m so thankful today’s Friday. I only have one client today, so I have alllll day to get to my

But first, it’s time for some

because it’s actually a little chilly outside this morning!

However, then it’s time to go run some errands, including – and most importantly

Clarabelle, like her mother, gets dramatic when hungry

Have a lovely Friday everyone!

Today, my Friday is __<RELIEVING>____ ( now you fill in the blank!!!!)

Kicking Bad Habits to the Curb

Howwwdy ho!

Don’t forget to enter my Lara Bar giveaway – just a couple more days for a chance to win the new flavors!

What a gorgeous morning here in central Illinois! I’ve already been in it and out of it, because it’s about to get H-O-T!

Last night my two clients cancelled on me, so I had the whole night free!!! This is unheard of on a Thursday night, so I took full advantage by actually cooking dinner!

For starters, I made a delicious and summery salad:

This was a spinach salad topped with fresh organic strawberries, raw chopped pecans, and this organic feta:

The dressing was my staple sweet dressing of EVOO + apple cider vinegar + stevia + sea salt. Perfect!

To go with the salad, I made my savory veggie quinoa casserole:

Topped with more feta…because it made it that much betta 😉

Wellll…almost perfect 😉

After dinner, the hubski and I headed to the basement for a movie night. We watched Inglorious Bastards, and while out there (such is Quiten Terrintino) it was awesome! I really loved it. So much that I got mad when the husband said it was just “pretty good.” Pretty good?! It was awesome, husband!

This morning I woke up super early to train a client. Afterwards, I got in a killer chest and legs weight session.

It went a lil’ sumthin like this:

Deadlifts Olympic bar + 2 10 lb. plates on each side; 10 reps 3 sets
Pushups 10 reps, 3 sets
Single leg stiff leg deadlifts 35 lb kettlebell, 3 sets 10 reps each side
Incline chest press 40 lb. barbell, 3×10
Bulgarian split squats holding 15 lb. dumbbells, 3×10 each side
Decline chest press 40 lb. barbell, 3×10

Done and done!

I returned home, starving of course, and made a little protein OIAJ:

With some iced coffee:

Just finished watering ALL the plants and flowers, and now I’m about to do some laundry before heading back to the gym for some cardio (running) and another client. Good times!

The rest of the day will entail grocery shopping, a little work, and hopefully cleaning out my car! Tonight we might be having a euchre night with some friends:)

I’ve never mentioned this on the blog before, but the husband is a smoker. Not two packs a day or anything, but he smokes daily. He quit once before, and made it all the way up to about two months after we got married before he reverted back to smoking (when he wasn’t smoking, he was chewing the nicotine gum.) We got married almost two years ago, so he’s been smoking again for about a year and a half.

Well yesterday we had a serious talk, and he decided he’s going to quit again. This time he’s going a different route, slowly decreasing the amount of ciggarettes he smokes per day until he eventually gets down to zero. He’s also using an electronic cigerette (you blow out vapor, rather than carcinogens.) Last time he went cold turkey, and just chewed the gum.

Either way, I am SO proud of him just for making the decision to quit again. I was beginning to grow impatient, and a huge weight is lifted off my shoulders too, now that he’s going to quit again. Any words of encouragement?

Any readers that are former smokers and have any advice for quitting? This is extremely challenging for the husband, so he would hugely appreciate any and all advice (and support!!) you could give him!!! 🙂 He needs all the encouragement he can get right now 😀

What bad habbit did you give up to lead a healthier, happier life? There’s TONS of other habits that could be changed to better our lives. A couple that I’ve made throughout my life are:

  • I stopped counting calories and having an obsessive mindset about food
  • I stopped binge drinking after college in order to feel healthier and protect my heart and body
  • I stopped being a cardio-maniac and started incorporated strength training into my exercise routine

Last Night I Ate a…

Hi guys! Ready for another work week? Here we go 🙂

Reminder: NuNaturals Stevia Giveaway ends at midnight! Enter for a chance to be one of FOUR winners:)

I woke up early this morning after a rough night’s sleep to train a client, per usual, and when finished and back home, I scarfed down half a banana and set out for a four mile run. However, when I got a little less than half way, I had to turn around. The ominous clouds I’d been worried about setting out for my run opened up and started to pour. I would have kept on going, but I had my Garmin and the iPod on me and didn’t want to get them soaked. So my 4 miler turned into a 3.06 miler – a 27:43 minute run.

I was pretty hungry when I got back, and wanted nothing else but hot oatmeal. So I made a batch of the usual whipped banana oats with almond milk, flax meal, and stevia.

I topped it with a spoonful of Greek yogurt and a single serving packet of Justin’s Maple Almond Butter.

Craving = Satisfied.

Melty, melty goodness.

Last Night

In October of 2009, I quit eating any and all land animals. My reasons were ethically based, but you can read more about that in this post. Basically, I just got tired of the internal battle going on in my head about loving animals and then turning around and eating them – especially those who were raised in an inhumane manner. On January 1st, 2010 I decided to just quit eating animals altogether. Since then, no meat has passed through my lips.

Until last night.

Last night, I was making dinner for Shane and myself. We were both craving Thai food, so I was going to make a recipe I found in the May/June issue of Clean Eating – Thai Shrimp with Brown Rice noodles, and just leave the shrimp out of my dish.
Except then I absentmindedly threw the shrimp into the pan with the sauce and veggies. All of it. And it actually looked good.

Alas…last night I ate shrimp, and while a bit extremely weird, it was good.

I’ve actually been talking a lot lately about how if I want some sort of fish (probably just shellfish) I won’t feel bad about eating it, and it might happen.
It happened last night.

IMG_7644(I’ll spare you any macro shots of the actual shrimp)

And it will probably happen again. I know I’ll never (or at least truly believe I’ll never) eat any sort of mammal again, but for reasons I won’t get into (to cut the drama) ya might see a shellfish now and then on here. However, now that I’m reflecting back on this and writing about it…I feel pretty guilty.

Pretend Desperate Housewife

G’morning! How we doing today?? I just finished training a client, and then noshed on some damn good oats:

Another blueberry + peanut butter combo…

aka the best combo 😉

However, as I type this (in Live Writer) the internet’s down. So unless the hubski calls me back before I’m ready to hit “publish” I may have done many other things since.

Man, I’m glad I’ve had early morning clients every morning since leaving my full time job– it gets my booty up and running and in productive mode. In fact, yesterday was super productive!

After my early morning clients and breakfast, I took Niko for a walk, and then headed to a new-to-me gym to try out one of their group fitness classes where I could potentially start instructing a class or two sooner or later.

A note about group fitness. Unfortunately, the course I signed up for to become better-prepared to become group fitness certified was cancelled due to low attendance. I was SO upset! Major suckage. However, luckily this gym sends its instructors to its own training to get certified for Group classes.

The gym I went to was a gym here in town called Fitness Connextion. I took Group Active, a class that combines step, strength, and balance in a one hour time period. It was a lot of fun, and went by SUPER fast. The instructor, Sarah, was also great and I think it’d be a blast to teach 😀

Afterward, I wanted a bit more cardio in my day, so I left my car parked in the lot and then took off on a 35 minute run throughout a neighborhood with monstrous houses, lakes, and fountains. In my mind I was a desperate housewife about to have an affair with the gazillion gardeners I saw in the yards. hahaha

Once home, I made a HUGE salad.

Check out the fork to bowl ratio:

Scientific ratio measurements there, folks. HUGE. It had romaine, arugula, broccoli, snap peas, avocado, and eggs in it. Delicious. The dressing was a mix of tahini + hummus + braggs amino acids. It worked perfectly with the veggies in the salad.

On the side, I had a brown juice (spinach + carrots + apples)

and a flattened banana from Trader Joe’s.

Clarabelle had a leaf:

A catnip leaf! We planted a catnip plant in our yard, and I wanted to see if it worked like the good stuff.

She’s obsessed. And Niko’s jealous.

The productivity continued as I steam mopped the upstairs tile, and got down on my hands and knees and scrubbed the downstairs tile. This was work, but it looks AMAZING now. And after some physical work, I put my mental productivity in check as I began to log all my mileage used for personal training. Being self-employed, one needs to be very detail-oriented!

My reward:

IMG_7426 Chocolate Oikos, Chocolate Cheerios, and blueberries.

The blueberries are now gone 😦

I had another client later in the evening, but was determined to make Brandi’s sweet potato falafel for dinner.

It was a successful and scrumptious dinner. Go make this. NOW!IMG_7440

On the side, I made a salad of arugula, romaine, pecans, and dried cherries – with a dressing of coconut oil + apple cider vinegar + stevia.

With a glass of vino (which made me tipsy instantly…what’s going on?!) to was it down. The sauce you see on the plate was just a tahini + hummus + sea salt mixture.

Well I’m out to go…be productive 😉 Hope you all have a kick-booty Tuesday!!

Aaand I’m without the internet until noon. So it’s probably lunch time or after now that you’re reading this. Sorry guys! 🙂
