Running on Emotions

Morning, morning! Didja all have a great weekend? Mine was quite pleasant!

Yesterday morning’s 11 miler kicked my boo-tay. I seriously didn’t think I would make it through it, and when I saw my subdivision in the distance, I almost broke down and cried in relief.

Let me explain.

My past two long runs have been on the trail, so I decided to take this week’s onto the open road. It was a new route, so I wrote it down on my palm so I wouldn’t get lost!

Unfortunately I started to get pretty sweaty early on and it got wiped off shortly into my run. However, I made with due and just kind of ran the general route. I veered off the path (which increased my mileage by a quarter mile) a little bit, but I got some very pretty pictures along the way. (iPhone pics – sorry for the bad lighting!)

GO ISU!

Contrary to the norm, the first two miles were the easiest of the entire run! Around mile three, I looked down and saw my Garmin was dead 😦 Ugh. The downside to depending on GPS during runs. Doh! This kind of through off my groove, but I kept on going. However, I probably took about 8 walking breaks in total. I just kept getting stomach cramps and my endurance was completely off. I’m not sure what caused it. I only ran 3 days in addition to the long run last week, so perhaps it’s the shorter mileage?

Anyway, I finally rounded onto the last stretch and was SO proud of myself. I honestly thought at one point that I would have to call Shane and get me.

Not sure of my mileage stats…grr.

and rushed to get ready and packed up everything to head to my parents’ house for my mom’s birthday!

Once we got there, Shane headed over to my brother’s (down the street) and worked on cars for a while. Meanwhile, my mom and I SHOPPED!

It was SUCH a nice day out. Seriously we are SO lucky this year – it’s April and feels like June!

We hit up Dick’s (where I got a foam roller! – post, I’m sure, to come soon) and Banana Republic and a couple other places.

We were ordering pizza later, but I was soooo hungry, so I busted out a Clif bar in the car:

When we got back to the house, I unfortunately had some writing to do, but finished up just in time for pizza! Glorious, glorious PIZZA!

Veggie, of course. Had about twice that amount.

And a salad with romaine, strawberries, walnuts, and mushrooms.

I made a dressing out of apple cider vinegar, olive oil, turbinado sugar, Dijon, and salt, and it was stupendous!

Then we busted into the birthday cake I made for my mom!

Shane and I headed home a couple hours later in order to get back at a decent hour since we both have work this morning. But out of all of us, she was the most pooped!

I’ve said this before on the blog, but anytime Niko goes to my parent’s house, she comes back wiped out. Dog park and grandparent’s house in one weekend=tired dog!

How do you remember your routes when you run/walk/bike/skip/hop? Do you always use the same route or do you switch it up a bit?

Easter Eleven

Since I had to train clients all afternoon on Saturday, I planned my long run for Sunday…Easter Sunday!

It was a difficult one. I started out in a long sleeve shirt w/ a tank underneath. It was about 60º and windy, but I got hot, fast. Luckily, I had a friend biking it with me! They were ever so kind to take the shirt off my hands!

I went through the initial “I can’t do this” until I got past the two mile hump. Then everything was smooth sailing! Well, until about mile 7. I started breaking down, and my right hip was giving me trouble. Around mile 8.5 I decided to start taking a walking break at the end of each mile, and that (that and my CamelBak) helped immensely!

A Quarter of a Century Old

Hi guys! Welp, I’ve officially joined the quarter of a century club. The big 2-5 was yesterday.
Sorry I skipped on posting yesterday, but I was busy celebratin-g!

Speaking of celebrating, I have LOTS of shenanigans to tell ya’ll about. Grab a snack and your kombucha of choice, because I got a lot of writing ahead.

It started on Friday when I was done with work (which was a looong afternoon!) I grabbed the hubski and we headed out to meet some friends at Gill St. Bar:

It was one of my friend’s birthday, too. So we celebrated with a beer with her. But we didn’t stay long, because we had some plans…

Like going to the (only!) vegan restaurant in town!

However, for some crazy reason, I’d never been the Coffeehouse – this was my first time!
It’s very eclectic, and had such a variety of patrons. I felt I could be very much myself here.
We found a quaint little table in the back and looked at the menu.

Perfect birthday Eve dinner 😀

Came home and it was relaxation time. I almost decided to had a glass of wine, but I had my 10 (!!) mile run planned the next day, so I went with some tea instead. Yes, I ran 10 miles on my birthday. It sounded good up until the night before. Then, I thought, why? why would I plan a 10 mile run on my birthday?!

I woke up feeling the same way, but there was no way out of it. It was mid forties and sunny, but windy, and damnit I was gonna do it.
Cooked up some breakfast for a little fuelage:

And a few hours later, I was getting ready to head out to the trail.

However, I think the golf bag and set is partly a present to him. He’s been asking me to play golf with him forever. I guess this is the summer! haha We’re not an active couple or anything… 😉

I was so excited to use my CamelBak on my run. I filled it with about a liter of water, and also stowed some Clif shot bloks and my car key in it:

Ready, Set, GO!

I ran on the trail because I knew the trees would help block out the wind. And boy I’m glad I did, because the wind was a-howwwling! The first couple miles I was kind of a downer and the number 10 just kept intimidating me. But by mile 3, I had gotten past my 2-mile-hump and had a good groove going. And around mile 5, I saw a sign for the David Davis Mansion (the house Abe Lincoln lived in when he lived in Bloomington) so I ran around the circle drive of the mansion. It was super cool – I had never been there before either. I wish I would have brought my camera. Next time I’ll remember to do so 🙂 Around mile 6, I remembered why I saved my 10 miler for my birthday (or it just so happened to be on my birthday, but I digress..) I was elated! Breaking a record and enjoying nature. Love, love, love it.
Around mile 7, I got a really bad cramp in my right calf, and stopped to stretch, ate three shot bloks, and then kept on going. Though the cramp didn’t go away, it faded a little. However it’s definitely painin’ today. I had a 4.5 mile recovery run planned for today, but I think I’m going to take it easy. Plus, I may or may not have a slight hangover, as well. What? You can’t judge a girl for having a few brewski’s on her birthday! More on that below… 😉

Phew! I was glad I kept my average pace under 10 minutes, but I wasn’t as speedy as last week’s long run. Next week is 10 again, so we’ll see if the pace changes then.

I headed out with the hubski to get some THAI food!!! Can you believe I’ve never had Thai food either? We were first going to go to Flavors of India, our fave Indian restaurant, but apparently they’re closed for renovations :-/

Somehow the afternoon FLEW by, and it was already time to head into Peoria to meet some friends for dinner and drinks.

note: shortly before I wrote this post, ALL of my pictures from last night got deleted somehow. I started freaking OUT, and then remembered my husbands a technology genius. He was able to recover MOST from last night. The rest I’ll steal from the other people who had cameras 😉


A big group of friends got together for mine, and my girl Mel’s birthday for dinner at Granite City.

Before dinner, I had some sort of fruity drink. It had chambord in it, so I was sold 😀 I had one, and then switched to some water with dinner…which was:

Hookie Run and Giveaway Winner!

I just got home from a lovely night of bowling, beers, and dinner with the husband. We had such a good time! Unfortunately, we couldn’t get in too much bowling before the lanes were needed for the leagues, but what we did bowl was a blast. Even if neither of our scores are worth bragging about 😉

Then we headed downtown for some dinner!

We were going to go to the hubski’s favorite Thai place, but unfortunately, it’s closed! I’ve never had Thai food before, and was really looking forward to trying it. Alas, it had a for sale sign in it, so we went to an old favorite, Rosies!

I ordered the eggplant rollatini, however they ran out of eggplant!! So instead, I got the vegetarian flatbread, which was just as good:

Mmm pesto, avocado, tomato and feta. Deeeelish. Sorry it’s so dark. The place is candlelit, and I didn’t use my flash. I ate all but two pieces. My appetite was rearing to go…for a reason.

With it I had a side salad with spinach, swiss chard, cucumbers, and some other veggies:

Apparently, it took more than an hour to get our food out to us because of some mix ups in the kitchen. Shane and I were talking so much, we really didn’t notice, but the waitress still ended up comping us everything except Shane’s entree!!

Honestly, we felt like we lucked out. We didn’t even notice the long wait, and got a free meal and our drinks (two beers and a glass of chard) free. Awesome 😀

We took a look at the dessert menu, but didn’t see anything that really stood out. However, I was still craving something sweet.

This morning before work, I woke up and went upstairs to our “gym room” and did 20 minutes on the elliptical, followed by chest, triceps, and shoulders work.

It was a beautiful day outside today!

Tomorrow is the first day of spring, but ironically, it’s supposed to be very cold, damp, and even snowy tomorrow! I had a 9 mile run planned for tomorrow, and I knew it was either going to be in horrible weather or on the treadmill. Blech! Then it hit me…life’s too short not to enjoy unseasonably warm (technically) winter days! Right? 😉 Plus, the 10 day forecast doesn’t call for one sunny day above 55 degrees.

So I finished up my work and took vacation time for the rest of the day. After work, I set out on my 9 miles for a Friday long run rather than a Saturday long run!

Twas an amazing run! I played on mapmyrun.com for a bit first, to get an idea of my route, and then got my gear together. Garmin, iPod, and water bottle + goo stasher:

Nine miles for a new PDR!

Next Saturday is 10 miles!! Next Saturday is also my birthday, and I’m actually really excited to make it the first time I enter into double digit land! Is it sad that I’m excited to run 10 miles on my birthday? We’ll find out! hahah

I was beat, and starving after my run. I promptly made a fruit smoothie:

I was out of spinach, so I went with what I had:

  • handful of frozen blueberries and cherries
  • 1 frozen banana
  • 1 t. maca
  • 1 T. chia seed
  • 1 T. hemp protein powder
  • Almond milk
  • 1 T. coconut butter

Uh-Maazing. But that didn’t calm the beast, so shortly afterward, I had a toasted Ezekiel English Muffin with Earth Balance and organic jam. Finally did the job 😀

Grabbed a kombucha (grape flavored – VERY good!!) and then I was off to train a client before coming back home to get ready for the night.

It’s time to crash in this house! I’m about to be out like a light.

Time’s a Changin’ and a PDR!

Morning all! Happy Daylight Savings Time! Remember to set your clocks ahead?

So how was everyones’ weekends? Mine’s been filled with good fun and good company!

One Friday a month I get together with a group of girlfriends for wine, shenanigans, and bunco, and this Friday was one of those nights! It was such a blast. Like I said in my previous post, it was one of the girl’s birthdays, so it gotta little more crazy than usual 😉

Birthday cake…that I never got a chance to try! Oh but don’t worry, there were other goodies sampled 😉
I didn’t end up winning anything, but it was a great time, nonetheless!

After a night of indulgence (i.e. glasses of wine and an abundance of sugar) I had a nice, stabilizing breakfast:

In the jar of goodness was:

-1/2 c. oat bran
-1/2 c. water
-1/2 c. almond milk
-1 packet of Purevia
-1 T. hemp powder
-1 banana
-About a T. of almond butter

Then it was time to get ready for a long run. The weather was rainy and about 45 degrees, so it was a bit of an internal debate on whether it was happening inside on the dreadmill or outside on the road. During the couple hours it took to digest breakfast, while I was majorly indecisive as to whether I’d run in or outdoors, I received THREE packages!

Another package was from Ryan at POM Wonderful, who sent me a case of their 100% pure pomegranate juice to sample:

After tearing into my packages, I finally decided on manning up and hitting the open road.

I used map my run to determine my route, but ended up getting a little more than I bargained for…

At what should have been the half way mark, I was already at 5 miles, and around mile 6, I ate to Clif Shot Bloks I packed in the bottom of my water bottle:

And got back to my house after 8.5 miles total, 1:22:46 later I got back to my house not feeling too shabby aside from my right hip being a little tight.

This GM contained a little more ingredients than the ushe:
-1 frozen banana
-1/2 c. frozen cherries (which are natural anti-inflammatories)
-1 T. maca
-1 T. chia seeds (great for joint lubrication)
-1/2 scoop of choc. protein powder
-1 T. almond butter
-Almond milk
-2 handfuls of spinach

So good, and kept me full for a good few hours, even after a long run!

After a little laziness, the hubski and I headed out and braved the rain to do some runnin’ around town. We were on the hunt for a nice centerpiece for our kitchen table! We seriously went to about six stores looking for the right centerpiece, and finally settled on this beaute from Pier One:

These pizzas were for the company we had over last night! My brother and sister-in-law came down for some pizza, movie, and family time and it was a blast! While the pizzas were cooking, we just hung out in the kitchen for a while talkin’ up a storm, munching on some snacks, and sippin’ on some drinks:

We sipped on this while watching Couples Retreat. It was a pretty good movie! Kinda hokey at times, but overall, a good flick, in my opinion! It was so nice to see them – seems like it’s far and few between that we get together like this. Wish I woulda gotten a picture!

Well it’s already almost noon! The time’s a changin’ and it’s catching up with me! On the agenda for today:

  • gym with Heidi for a run and legs
  • grocery shopping
  • going through LLC and other self-employed business
  • laundry
  • floors

Yikes! It’s a busy one!! Better get crackin’ 😀

Which daylight savings do you prefer more? Springing ahead or falling back? I’m a HUGE fan of springing ahead. I hate when it gets dark so early! When it stays lighter later, it reminds me of barbeques, long evening walks, and SUMMER!

No Pressure Run

What a laaazy day today has been. Well, except for the fact the I have a new Personal Distance Record! Yep, I ran eight miles today in 1 hour 20 minutes and 17 seconds. I actually went back and forth about 5 times on whether I would run it today or tomorrow, but ultimately (and obviously) decided I’d do it today. I woke up with a major head and cramps, because ya know, I picked Day One of TOTM to run my longest distance. Plus, it was 40 degrees outside! However, I thought of Caitlin’s post about not putting any pressure on making any certain time, and decided I’d make this run the same. I decided to call it a No Pressure Run. I just ran at whatever speed felt right, and didn’t care if I was running an X minute mile. I just wanted to finish and enjoy the run. I also new I had to wear layers since it was a cold one!

I think I over dressed just a wee bit, but I wasn’t super hot or anything. I had on some lulu pants, a long sleeved nike shirt with a lulu jacket over it. Hey, I wanted to be prepared.

 

So that’s what I did.

It was actually an easy run for 8 miles! Or at least a lot easier than I thought it’d be. I knew I would have to stay hydrated for 8 miles, so I had originally planned to do my 6 mile route, which has a drinking fountain at the end, get a drink, and then do the route again but cut it in half (or a little under.) But I knew I could reach ISU and run around there (which I love doing) with 8 miles to use up. I also knew there was a Potbelly’s about a mile away when I reached mile 3, so I decided to just run in the Potbelly’s and jam out to some acoustic Jimmy Buffet cover singer, and gulp water in the bathroom sink. Surprisingly, the water tasted very good!

I felt much better and hydrated, and I was on my way. Then I ventured to ISU, which is nice, because it’s so pedestrian friendly because of all the students. They even have a cool tunnel underground so pedestrians don’t have to walk across a super busy street. I ran past all the buildings I used to go to class at, and then ran on over to Uptown Normal to see the progress they’ve made on “redoing it” and it looked awesome! I kinda got lost in the construction, but I eventually found my way out and back to the main road, and back to my street at exactly 8 miles. It was such a nice, no pressure run. It was also a beautiful run. Due to the freeze we had last night, all the trees are shades of bright red, orange and green. So beautiful.

There ends my productiveness. The rest of the day has been spent in the theatre downstairs watching Close Encounters of the Third Kind with my lovely husband. It’s a pretty good movie!

Actually, I did end up getting the Halloween decorations out today, so that counts as productiveness, right?

Now I’m trying to get up the motivation to go to the grocery store and the car place to get some windshield wiper blades with the hubski.

Surprisingly, I’m not a hungry beast today. After burning almost 1,000 calories on my run, you’d think I would be, right? I’ve been refueling, nevertheless, but not eating everything in sight like I usually do.

Today’s eats include some hemp toast with the rest of my Barney butter and black cherry jam:

I ran out of Barney Butter, and it was a sad moment.

 

I’m in a such a toast phase lately.

Some brown sludge/green monster, which included a half of a frozen banana, one carrot, one scoop of Amazing Grass Superfood, almond milk, and a packet of this protein powder I picked up at Naturally Yours:

It was pretty good! The strawberry taste was a bit overbearing, but with the other stuff mixed in, it was pretty OK.

Some quick n easy chili with a Cinnamon Raisin Swirl Peanut Butter sandwich:

The chili had didney beans, crushed tomatoes, chili powder and coriander.

 

I have a feeling tonight’s going to be continued with some laziness. I might get up the motivation to do a load of laundry. Maybe 😉

Is your appetite typically suppressed or rearing to go after a rigorous workout?  I know I need to eat back those calories I burned off, but I’m just not that hungry today! Maybe it will kick in tomorrow :)       

PDR and Dinner at Rosie’s

Hey hey! I survived my 7 miler!! Although I wore my new workout gear, I didn’t really get to show it off. I ended up having to wear my Lululemon track jacket the entire time, because it was only 53º out 😦 Oh well. This was my first time running in the “cold” aka not beastly hot, (yep, it was hot just last weekend!) so I wasn’t too sure what to expect.

So after I got my gear on, including my new socks:

(Thank GOD they let me know which feet they go on 😉 LOL) I grabbed a bottle of cold water, my iPod, and some Luna Moons and headed out.

The first mile was me adjusting myself the entire time. I was wearing my new shoes, so I had to re-tie them a couple times, I had to re-thread my iPod head phones through the socket of my jacket again, and then I finally had to ditch my water bottle. I just could not run with this thing! It was too cold and heavy and was just messing up my groove. Looks like I may have to head back to Often Running to pick up a Camel Back water holder.

After I got myself situated, it was smooth sailing. I added a new list of songs to a running play list, and I just totally jammed out the entire time. I’ll post my play list soon (don’t want to make this post too long!) I ended up running down to ISU’s campus, and meandering about the quad, and kinda got lost and wound up having to run up an extra hill while I was at it. Oh well, no big deal!

I was really surprised at how easy this run was for me. It could have been because I wasn’t sweating as much as I usually do, due to the drop in temperature. Around mile 6, I ate 2 Luna Moons before stopping at a drinking fountain.

I could feel the energy, because I usually have trouble on that last incline back to my house, but I think the extra boost helped my endurance.

I made it back in 1:08:07 and then stretched my little heart out. As tradition goes (and as Shane requested), I then made some oat and whole wheat pancakes for my post-run fuel up. This time, instead of adding blueberries, I added chocolate chips (hells yeah!) and instead of having three or four, I had one with a side of a veggie omelet.


Oh-so-gooood! It was the perfect post-run brunch.

Surprisingly, I didn’t feel like crawling into bed in fetal position after my shower, so I did some laundry, and cleaned up a little. Then the fatigue hit me and I spent a good 2 hours in horizontal position watching a movie in the theater downstairs. I did manage to press pause and scrounge up a snack of plain Oikos, blueberries and granola, though. (Unpictured, because my camera is all the sudden taking blurry pics 😦 All in all, I think it was a great run, and I’m excited for 7.5 miles next Sunday 😀

Good Eats


Last night for dinner, Shane and I went to one of our favorites here in town, Rosies.

This place has so many different and unique combinations of food, and they always have such great specials. Shane thought of going here, and I was totally glad he came up with the idea!

We sat in the bar area, which has a little more charm, in my opinion, and sat on the same side of a booth.


My stomach was a little off (I think I was just super hungry) so I didn’t get any big-girl drinks, just water. We started off with one of their appetizers on special, the Portabella Mushroom Ravioli.


Holy yum-topia. Goodness this was goodness. It had a ginormous portabella mushroom, layered with spinach, ricotta, Italian sausage, mozzarella, tomatoes, and marinara type sauce. I skimmed off most of the sausage, and ate a very healthy portion. I SO want to try and re-create this dish. Wow.

Our entrees came out, and I had my usual: the Shrimp Greek Salad:

Shrimp, olives, feta, artichoke, and onions galore! This salad is to-die-for. I only ate half, and took home half for lunch today. (Note: I didn’t have this for lunch today, because it fell on the floor and I lost it. Tear :()

Shane got another baked ravioli dish, which was just blanketed in mozzarella.

We were going to go to a cookout/boozefest afterward, but since my tummy wasn’t feeling the best, the last thing I wanted to do was drink, so we just went home and called it a night (on the couch.) This was probably the better idea for my run this morning, too.
