The 13.1 Club

I’m officially a member!

Thanks to everyone for their good luck wishes!! 😀

But wait. Let’s back up a minute. It was a LONG journey to get to that smiling face.

Packet Pickup

I headed down to Champaign where the race was last night to pick up my packet. Unfortunately, packet pick up was ONLY the day before the race, so I had to make the hour and 15 minute drive down to do that (or should I say my awesome parents provided me the ride.)

IMG_1977 The expo was HUGE.

That’s me! 😀

Not impressed with the goody bags, aka, nothing but a shirt and a bag, but the shirt was pretty cute!

Definitely sporting that shirt as I write.

After the expo, we hit up Panera for some dinner. I got the Mediterranean veggie sandwich, which I usually request whole grain bread with, but decided to bask in the tomato basil goodness, and a Greek salad.

Never fails to impress.

It was already getting late, so we headed on home, and I snuggled up in bed around 9:30. But before I fell asleep, I made sure to set TWO alarms.

Race Day

Do you see what’s wrong with that picture? Look closely… closer…it’s set for WEEKDAYS! Sh!t. I awoke to Shane tapping me on the shoulder asking me what time we needed to leave at 5:57!!! Umm…we needed to leave by 5:15. I immediately freaked. Well, we both freaked.

The next ten minutes involved the hubski and me running around the house at warp speed shouting at each other. Here’s a sample:

Hubski: “We need to LEAVE!”

Hubski: “Get. In. The. Car!!!”

Me: “But I NEED my iPod!!!”

And then I fell down the stairs and bruised the top of my foot. Awesome.

I was NOT happy while eating my pre-race breakfast of PB and banana in a flat out in the car:IMG_1981

But low and behold…we made it just in time to use a porta potty and get in line:

Ready to go aside from it all…

How weird does this picture look??

Haha yeah, that’s definitely not my left arm 🙂

Then the gun sounded and we were off!

IMG_1988  pretending to run…

IMG_1990  And finally running 5 minutes later!

The race went by super fast. I can’t believe I ran 13.1 miles without. coffee. And it wasn’t bad either. It was actually a very emotional run because I was running for something (which I’m announcing on Monday’s post!!!!) I swear around mile 7 when I listened to Curt (in GLEE) sing a House is not a Home, I got chills. Then again when Mercedes sang Beautiful around mile 10.

There were thousands of people (14,000?) running this race, so it did get very crowded at times. It really messed up my pacing. But I guess that’s expected. I also stopped to drink water or Gatorade at every single station. I wasn’t very hydrated because of the hectic morning, and I wanted to keep my energy up.

IMG_1997 Did I mention the race was at U of I? And the finish line was the 50 yard line?

It was both surreal and magical. And I couldn’t believe how quick it went by and how “easy” it was for me. I put easy in quotes, because we all know it wasn’t easy. I’m equating easy with not wanting to collapse and roll over. lol

IMG_2009   IMG_2012

I did it!!!! 😀

My time, according the the Garmin at 13.11 miles was 2 hrs, 11 minutes, 47 seconds. Oh, and I achieved a negative split! It was also automatically a PR. This was my first time running 13.1 miles, as my training plan stopped at 12! 🙂 I get to see my chip time tonight.

Post Race

Naturally, my stomach wanted to eat my backbone after the race, but the food line was oodles of people long. So we headed to Bob Evans.

And ate our faces off.

COFFEEE! and water.

IMG_2016 Eggs over medium w/ home fries.

Nothin’ healthy bout this, folks. And it was fan-freaking-tastic.

Now I’m back home and showered, and probably going to go be horizontal for a good couple hours. Not sure what the afternoon will entail! I know I have a mound of laundry to do…but that doesn’t sound very fun 😉

Thanks for reading my little recap, guys. Hope you enjoyed it! 🙂

When’s the last time you overslept for something super duper important?? Was it because you had it set to pm instead of am? Phone die? Same mistake as I made? I swear, I hardly ever mess up my alarms. Grr..stupid iPhone settings 😉

Hookie Run and Giveaway Winner!

Hey lovlies!

I just got home from a lovely night of bowling, beers, and dinner with the husband. We had such a good time! Unfortunately, we couldn’t get in too much bowling before the lanes were needed for the leagues, but what we did bowl was a blast. Even if neither of our scores are worth bragging about 😉

Then we headed downtown for some dinner!

We were going to go to the hubski’s favorite Thai place, but unfortunately, it’s closed! I’ve never had Thai food before, and was really looking forward to trying it. Alas, it had a for sale sign in it, so we went to an old favorite, Rosies!

I ordered the eggplant rollatini, however they ran out of eggplant!! So instead, I got the vegetarian flatbread, which was just as good:

Mmm pesto, avocado, tomato and feta. Deeeelish. Sorry it’s so dark. The place is candlelit, and I didn’t use my flash. I ate all but two pieces. My appetite was rearing to go…for a reason.

With it I had a side salad with spinach, swiss chard, cucumbers, and some other veggies:

Apparently, it took more than an hour to get our food out to us because of some mix ups in the kitchen. Shane and I were talking so much, we really didn’t notice, but the waitress still ended up comping us everything except Shane’s entree!!

Shane’s entree:

Swordfish, potatoes, and veggies. He luuuurved it.

Honestly, we felt like we lucked out. We didn’t even notice the long wait, and got a free meal and our drinks (two beers and a glass of chard) free. Awesome 😀

We took a look at the dessert menu, but didn’t see anything that really stood out. However, I was still craving something sweet.

Enter – chocolate banana soft serve!

1.5 frozen bananas, 1 T. cacao powder, 1 t. agave nectar.

With a crumbled samoa on top. Oh yes, yes I did. Deeeelightful!

This morning before work, I woke up and went upstairs to our “gym room” and did 20 minutes on the elliptical, followed by chest, triceps, and shoulders work.

It was a beautiful day outside today!

Tomorrow is the first day of spring, but ironically, it’s supposed to be very cold, damp, and even snowy tomorrow! I had a 9 mile run planned for tomorrow, and I knew it was either going to be in horrible weather or on the treadmill. Blech! Then it hit me…life’s too short not to enjoy unseasonably warm (technically) winter days! Right? 😉 Plus, the 10 day forecast doesn’t call for one sunny day above 55 degrees.

So I finished up my work and took vacation time for the rest of the day. After work, I set out on my 9 miles for a Friday long run rather than a Saturday long run!

Twas an amazing run! I played on for a bit first, to get an idea of my route, and then got my gear together. Garmin, iPod, and water bottle + goo stasher:

Perfect water bottle for long runs. The bottom compartment twists off and is the perfect place to stack a few Clif Shotbloks 😉

Stat it out:

Mile 1: 9:45

Mile 2: 9:32

Mile 3: 9:54

Mile 4: 9:41

Mile 5: 9:49

Mile 6: 9:29

Mile 7: 9:48

Mile 8: 9:35

Mile 9: 9:31

Total time: 1 hr. 27 minutes, 3 seconds. Yowza.

Nine miles for a new PDR!

Next Saturday is 10 miles!! Next Saturday is also my birthday, and I’m actually really excited to make it the first time I enter into double digit land! Is it sad that I’m excited to run 10 miles on my birthday? We’ll find out! hahah

I was beat, and starving after my run. I promptly made a fruit smoothie:

I was out of spinach, so I went with what I had:

  • handful of frozen blueberries and cherries
  • 1 frozen banana
  • 1 t. maca
  • 1 T. chia seed
  • 1 T. hemp protein powder
  • Almond milk
  • 1 T. coconut butter

Uh-Maazing. But that didn’t calm the beast, so shortly afterward, I had a toasted Ezekiel English Muffin with Earth Balance and organic jam. Finally did the job 😀

Grabbed a kombucha (grape flavored – VERY good!!) and then I was off to train a client before coming back home to get ready for the night.

It’s time to crash in this house! I’m about to be out like a light.

Anything fun going on this weekend? What’s your plans? Tomorrow I plan on cleaning, going to a movie with a couple girlfriends, and some light cardio. Sunday I’m hoping to catch up with a friend who just moved back from California!! She’s my best friend from college, and whenever we see each other, no matter how long it’s been, we pick up right where we left off 😀

Have a fabulous night, bloggy friends!!

Time’s a Changin’ and a PDR!

Morning all! Happy Daylight Savings Time! Remember to set your clocks ahead?

So how was everyones’ weekends? Mine’s been filled with good fun and good company!

One Friday a month I get together with a group of girlfriends for wine, shenanigans, and bunco, and this Friday was one of those nights! It was such a blast. Like I said in my previous post, it was one of the girl’s birthdays, so it gotta little more crazy than usual 😉

Oh, and everyone loved the balls I brought 😀

Birthday cake…that I never got a chance to try! Oh but don’t worry, there were other goodies sampled 😉
I didn’t end up winning anything, but it was a great time, nonetheless!

After a night of indulgence (i.e. glasses of wine and an abundance of sugar) I had a nice, stabilizing breakfast:

Oat (bran) in a jar!

In the jar of goodness was:

-1/2 c. oat bran
-1/2 c. water
-1/2 c. almond milk
-1 packet of Purevia
-1 T. hemp powder
-1 banana
-About a T. of almond butter

Then it was time to get ready for a long run. The weather was rainy and about 45 degrees, so it was a bit of an internal debate on whether it was happening inside on the dreadmill or outside on the road. During the couple hours it took to digest breakfast, while I was majorly indecisive as to whether I’d run in or outdoors, I received THREE packages!

Here’s a couple of em:

Birthday Lulu’s!

My mom got me some of the new Wunder Groove crops, and I am in LURVE with them. Two best styles combined into one, if ya ask me!

Another package was from Ryan at POM Wonderful, who sent me a case of their 100% pure pomegranate juice to sample:

Review and experimentations coming soon 😉

After tearing into my packages, I finally decided on manning up and hitting the open road.

I used map my run to determine my route, but ended up getting a little more than I bargained for…

At what should have been the half way mark, I was already at 5 miles, and around mile 6, I ate to Clif Shot Bloks I packed in the bottom of my water bottle:

And got back to my house after 8.5 miles total, 1:22:46 later I got back to my house not feeling too shabby aside from my right hip being a little tight.
Stats n Splits:

Mile 1: 9:39
Mile 2: 9:46
Mile 3: 9:57
Mile 4: 10:06
Mile 5: 9:43
Mile 6: 9:48
Mile 7: 9:38
Mile 8: 9:29
Mile 8.5: 9:02

Woot! Average pace was 9:44. Not too shabby!

And that, my friends, is a personal distance record for this girl!  Yep, the farthest I’ve run is 8 miles. This…is was 8.5 miles felt like:

It also finally feels like running season has officially started for me. I came back with blisters and a wound (warning)

Let the race season begin! 😉

After a quick shower, I made a delicious refueling Green Monster:

This GM contained a little more ingredients than the ushe:
-1 frozen banana
-1/2 c. frozen cherries (which are natural anti-inflammatories)
-1 T. maca
-1 T. chia seeds (great for joint lubrication)
-1/2 scoop of choc. protein powder
-1 T. almond butter
-Almond milk
-2 handfuls of spinach

So good, and kept me full for a good few hours, even after a long run!

After a little laziness, the hubski and I headed out and braved the rain to do some runnin’ around town. We were on the hunt for a nice centerpiece for our kitchen table! We seriously went to about six stores looking for the right centerpiece, and finally settled on this beaute from Pier One:

Whatdya think? Doesn’t it go perfectly with the painting behind it?! I love, love, love it:D She’s a keeper.

While we were out, I polished off this lovely bar:

Quite the fantastic bar, if I do say so myself!

Also sipped on this as we were bumming around:

Around 5, we picked up a couple Papa Murphy’s pizzas and headed home!

IMG_5910 IMG_5911
These pizzas were for the company we had over last night! My brother and sister-in-law came down for some pizza, movie, and family time and it was a blast! While the pizzas were cooking, we just hung out in the kitchen for a while talkin’ up a storm, munching on some snacks, and sippin’ on some drinks:

My SIL loooves Kahlua, so I knew she’d join me in an after dinner drink of decaf and Kahula + cream:

We sipped on this while watching Couples Retreat. It was a pretty good movie! Kinda hokey at times, but overall, a good flick, in my opinion! It was so nice to see them – seems like it’s far and few between that we get together like this. Wish I woulda gotten a picture!

Well it’s already almost noon! The time’s a changin’ and it’s catching up with me! On the agenda for today:

  • gym with Heidi for a run and legs
  • grocery shopping
  • going through LLC and other self-employed business
  • laundry
  • floors

Yikes! It’s a busy one!! Better get crackin’ 😀

Have a beautiful Sunday, everyone!!

Which daylight savings do you prefer more? Springing ahead or falling back? I’m a HUGE fan of springing ahead. I hate when it gets dark so early! When it stays lighter later, it reminds me of barbeques, long evening walks, and SUMMER!

A New PR for a 5K Race!

Hi Bloggy friends! Sorry I haven’t been able to post my race re-cap until now! My busy Friday has overflowed into today, and I haven’t had a moment to sit down and blog!

Race Re-Cap

This morning I woke up around 6:00 a.m., regretting the 2 margaritas I had last night at bunco. I also had day one of the visitor who lets me know I’m not pregnant. Race Day. Ohhh race day.

After getting over it, I made my way to kitchen for coffee and copious amounts of water and some breakfast.

I smushed a banana with some Barney butter and spread it on a Flat Out! wrap. It was sooo good. I can’t believe how awesome these wraps are. Best thing since sliced bread, hands down. 😀 And P.S. look at this CUTE “banana keeper”

It’s from Tupperware, and it’s going to make taking bananas to work SO much easier-and cute 😉 I just had to share it with you guys 😀

Since the race was in my home town, and I was running with my madre, I stopped at my parents’ house before going to the race.

No, no dad popping out of bushes to snap pictures this time. This time, he and my brother came out to support me by being innocent by-standers.

I pounded out the first mile quick. Hearing the man with the stop watch announce “8:14!!!” as I sped by, rocked my world! At first. Then I started to panic that I would wear myself out after a bit. And I looked down and saw my heart rate was already 181. Yikes.

So I paced myself a little better for mile two, but I was still going strong. My heart rate was in the 180’s for a good portion of the race. Oops. My max HR actually ended up being 193 – not good.

Once I got to the third mile, it was smooooth sailing. That is, until my side decided to tense itself up as hard as it could, and nearly made me double over in pain. I was seriously only a tenth of a mile to the finish line, but I felt like I was being stuck with a knife with each step. But I used the mantra that “I AM A MACHINE!” and trucked it to the finish line, making a personal record of 26:46! Holler!!

Obviously I was so excited that I beat my best time of 27:00. However, when I crossed the finish line I definitely didn’t look happy. A few minutes later and the pain was gone. Pain is fades, but personal records are with ya for the long haul! Well, until you broke them again I suppose 😉

And the best part!

After the race, I took my dad and big bro up on an offer to get some grub at a little place in Pekin called Cobbler Corner:

It’s a little mom and pop restaurant that’s always packed with patrons!

I had the veggie omelet – light on the butta, with some homefries – heavy, I’m sure, on the butta. Oh well, I ate em anyway 😀

And they were delish! My brother, dad and I always used to go out for breakfast growing up, so it was nice to do that with them:)

Next Race: Next Saturday’s 10K. This is my first 10K, so I’m SUPER pumped! My friend, Debby will be joining me for this running extravaganza. Woop woop!

Runners: Do you set personal goals when racing? Are they always time-related?

Non runners: What’s a family tradition that you had growing up, that you still carry on today?
