Rough Run; Lessons Learned

My seven miler yesterday morning was pretty rough.  I haven’t had a rough run like this in a long time. When this happened, I try to see the positive.

Lessons Learned from Rough Run

#1 – Set Your Alarm for the Right Day

Before going to sleep Saturday night, I checked the weather. 75 degrees at 7:00 a.m? 80 at 8:00?! Ugh. I must get out the door and start pounding pavement by 7:30. Set alarm for 6:15? Check. Set it for the right day? Ch…not so much.

#2 – Eat and Digest a Fueling Breakfast

Arnold Thin w/ a smashed ripe banana on one side and ~ 1 T. Justin’s Maple Almond Butter on the other.  The perfect pre-run breakfast in my book.

It was a great pre-run breakfast, but the time between consumption + running was not long enough. The result was three side cramps. One right when I hit mile two, one at mile four, and by the sixth mile, I was dealing with three different cramps.  Yikes! So I took a couple walking breaks now and then, and rode ran it out.

#3 – Instead of chugging a gallon of water right before walking out the door, rely on Camel Bak a little more.

Refer to lessons learned #2

So it wasn’t a great run. It wasn’t a horrible run either! I averaged 9:39 and finished in 1:07:33 with some walking breaks every now and then. The stats are actually better than how I felt.

When I got back to the house, I was able to do some damage control. My absolutely soaked shirt was a glaring sign that I needed some e-lec-tro-lytes in my life.

In the form of coconut water!

It’s extremely important to replenish electrolytes after a long(er) workout especially if it’s hot, humid, and you’re sweating a lot. Coconut water does a spectacular job!

Freshened up with some ‘cubes n club (soda.)

I read a little bit (Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) until my stomach growled that it was ready for some post-run fuel:

In smoothie-form! It’s important to get some fuel as soon as your stomach can tolerate it. After about an hour, my tummy let me know it was OK, and I got my fuel in my favorite way post-workout. This was another Chocolate Mint Green Smoothie!

I love taking leaves from my chocolate mint plant and adding them to smoothies. So delicious! Also included was ice, a frozen banana, Vega Shake and Go Chocolate, maca, and a big handful of spinach.

Topped off with a crumbled homemade granola bar. Perfect!

I had plans of being productive today. I really did. But those plans went out the window when my mom invited me to come over and go shopping with her.

We hit up Sephora

Target, and the grocery store.

Hiiii family:D

After a while, I was back on the road to my hungry husband. Sunday nights are for grillin’ 🙂

Thermos – Cold Matters

While I was out gallivanting from store to store with my madre, I made sure to stay hydrated. It was a thick 90+ degrees in Illinois yesterday, so water was even more of a must. It was the perfect day to test out a product that Maggie from Thermos sent me!

This is a Vacuum Insulated Hydration Bottle. It boasts to keep your beverage cold for 12 hours!!

Obviously, I had to do the ultimate test and bring it with me on a 90 degree day in an even hotter car while shopping. So how’d it do?

  • After 3 + hours of shopping, and leaving it in the car while in the stores, my water was still cold!
  • It fit in all three of my car cup holders
  • The pop-top spout made for ease of drinking
  • The latch on the top ensured no liquid would escape. I could throw it in my purse and not worry about my phone getting water damage
  • It doesn’t sweat. No sweat rings!

  • The size. It’s really not big enough to have to keep something cold for 12 hours. It can only hold 18 ounces.

All in all, I love it! Would you guys want to do a giveaway on one?

Well, I’m off to (hopefully) have a productive day. So much to do!!! It’s what I get for choosing fun over work this weekend. Ahhh it was worth it;)

Coming up, I’m going to talk about a local festival held in my town we had our hand at Friday evening – Beer Fest!

Have a Marvelous Monday, all!!

What is your favorite post-workout meal or snack? Mine’s a smoothie for sure. Covers all the bases!

Fun Run Friday

Happy Friday! Was it really a week ago that I was fumbling my way around the El into Chicago to go to the Healthy Living Summit? It feels like I got back yesterday…

This morning I woke up not really sure what I’d do for my workout. I’m sure you’ve noticed, I’m a work out in the morning type of gal. I only like to shower once a day, and working out in the morning works out (ha) well with that preference. I knew I wanted to run, but an easy run, and I knew I wanted to lift weights.

So I channeled my mother, who does what I did this morning nearly every day. I ran the two miles and change to my gym, did the following tri-sets:

Single point row 20 lb dumbbells, 10 reps
Cable fly 12.5 lbs, 10 reps
Deadlift Olympic bar + 5 lb. plates, 10 reps

Repeat 3x’s

Weighted calf raise on box 25 lb. plate in each hand, 15 reps
Overhead cable extension 25 lbs, 10 reps
Stiff-leg deadlift olympic bar + 10 lb plates, 12 reps

Repeat 3 x’s

Then I used the bathroom and grabbed another drink and ran back home! It was an awesome way to change it up. I think I might start implementing this more Fridays 🙂 A fun Friday workout 🙂

I was starving when I got home. Running + weights = one hangry Paige.

But breakfast was oh-so-worth the weight.

I layered banana protein oatmeal with yogurt in an oversized wine glass, with a little bit of Trader Joe’s Flax seed almond butter and granola on top.

It was so delicious it inspired some creative photography.

IMG_9053 IMG_9054

Orrr just taking a picture of it through the glass table, haha

I wanted to take a minute and talk about some new products I’m loving right now.

Note: I bought each of these with my money; Flat Out or Laughing Cow is not compensating me for the reviews below

I was at Kroger the other day, when I walked past the deli section and did a double take:

Flat Out bread pita chips?! Why haven’t I heard of these? Have you guys tried them before?

If not, I recommend you go to your nearest grocer, and pick yourself up a bag.

With hummus, these chips give Stacy’s a run for their money. Oh, yes.

The same thing happened while at Trader Joe’s the other day. Now, I’ve had the Laughing Cow cheese wedges before, and they’re great – individual little wedges that are great for being on the go.

Wait, what? Blue cheese?! Why are these secrets being kept from me? I love love love blue cheese. It’s one of my favorite cheeses! Honestly, I really don’t eat much cheese anymore, but when I saw this, I had to make it mine.

Used as a condiment in a veggie sandwich, it worked perfectly!

Again, neither of these companies are paying/compensating me for these reviews – I just had to share the wealth!

Well I’m off to get some laundry done. Being away for a weekend and then having a super busy week resulted in a full day’s worth of laundry for me. It actually needed to be done earlier than today, alas, it waited for me. Laundy’s nice like that 😉 Then I think a nice, relaxing night is in store tonight:)

Which new (to you) foods are you loving lately?

Priming up for a Tempo Run

Aloha! The husband and I were just reminiscing about our Hawaii honeymoon, and I have island on the brain 🙂

When I woke up this morning and peeked outside, I saw the conditions were prime for a run – 65 degrees with the sun just peeking out above the horizon. Perfect? Methinks so.

So run, I did. I actually implemented a training run into this week that I haven’t done in quite some time: a tempo run! A tempo run is where you start out slow and steady, pick up the pace with each mile, and then ease up a bit again for that last mile. At least that’s what it is in my mind. Anyway, I cranked out 5 miles in about 44:08 with an average pace of 8:49

1 – 9:46

2 – 8:58

3 – 8:40

4 – 8:13

5 – 8:38

Ok, so I got a little overzealous and booked it during the last mile. I can’t help it!

I immediately came inside and grabbed some nature’s gatorade to sip on

And after rehydrating the flowers, taking the pup for a walk, and showering, I refueled.

Now, I’ve been sparing you the typical breakfast pictures because honestly, I haven’t come up with anything post worthy lately! However, today I made the prettiest whole wheat protein waffle, and I have to share:

Is there anything better than a juicy, organic peach in the summer time?

IMG_9038I think not!

Yesterday was a rest day, workout wise. Sometimes 12 + hour work days just need to be rest days, knowwhatImean? Besides, it’s been a week since my last official rest day. A rest day it was NOT in terms of actually being restful. Since 6:00 this morning I have been busy with insurance work, clients, and business meetings. All in all a good day though 😀 And the weather is PERFECT right now in Illinois; how about in your part of the globe?

Since yesterday was quite the go-go-go type of day, I relied on (and planned for) a nice and simple meal.

Buitoni had teamed up with Foodbuzz and offered me the chance to sample one of their “meal for two” dinners. I chose the only vegetarian option available, four cheese and spinach ravioli

IMG_9021Not bad.

The directions were simple enough with the only cooking involved being to boil the pasta, which the husband did for me. But I wasn’t even prepared for the deliciousness that was to come!

I’m not sure if it was the sauce on the pasta or my hunger that made it so fantastic, but I’m sold!

We enjoyed the meal with some light and crisp Chardonnay:

Count your lucky stars…:)

Well I’m to go work for a bit and then train a few clients. Tonight on the dinner menu is an Indian dish! Pretty excited about that 😀

What’s your ideal weather conditions for an outdoor run or workout? Mine is right at dawn between 60 and 70 degrees, with clear skies. Oh, summer mornings in Illinois 🙂

Healthy Living Time Machine

Gooood morning!

Wow, it’s only 7:30, and I’ve been awake for three hours. Woot! Too bad I got about the same amount of sleep to boot. (Ha, I’m a poet.)

So this post is going to go down a little different. Switching things up a bit. Let’s play the backwards game! I’m going to tell you about my eats, exercise, and enjoyments going backwards in time. Kind of like a healthy living blog time machiiiiiine 😉

Just a minute ago, I had breakfast outside on the back porch with Niko in my sweaty running clothes:

Seriously, is there a way to make overnight oats look any uglier?

Nope, not even by sprinkling on feta cheese crumbled coconut butter on top. So. freaking. delicious, though. 1/3 c. oats, maca, stevia, sea salt, PB, greek yogurt, almond milk, Jay Robb, carob powder, and cocoa nibs.

I had actually planned on having hot oats for breakfast this morning, but after my client this morning at 5:00 a.m. (who beat out my 5:15 client for having the earliest session 😉 I don’t mind at all though!) I noticed the beast known as my appetite hadn’t reared its ugly beautiful head yet. I knew I only had a small window of time before it came, so I jumped at the chance of getting in an easy three mile run. And a hot and sweaty post-run Paige does not = an appetite for hot oats. Cold oats it was!

3.1 mile run: 29:09, and to break it down (wicka wicka!): 9:42, 9:26, 9:10.

I think my appetite held off so well because right before I went to bed, I had a bowl of chocolate Cheerios + almond milk:

Going back even further in time, before waking up at 4:30, I slept for about four hours. You see, I had a sand volleyball game on the other side of town last night that lasted until about 10:00. And we lost. No words, but I was very angry. See ya undefeated record!

A couple hours before the game of volley, I made some dinner. Being able to say, “make dinner” just makes me smile. For a couple months there, the hubski was on his own, and my meals were either frozen, salads, or soups. It’s a pleasure to be able to have time to cook again.

Veggie Chili!

This veggie chili was more than simple to make, though. In a sauce pan, I let some onion and garlic sweat it out. Then a mix of half black beans, half pinto beans, joined them, and then soon after, some diced tomatoes. Simmer down, folks.

Stick Stickly, anyone? Write to me, Stick Stickly, PO Box 9-6-3, New York City, New York State. 1-0-1-0-8. Anyone? lol OK, I digress…

After a few minutes of simmering down (folks), I added 1 tsp of ww flour, chili powder, cumin, paprika, cayenne, and sea salt and cooked on low. After about 10-15 minutes, I added hot sauce, and voila!

Where I come from in the Mid West, we eat peanut butter sandwiches with our chili!

Mmm. Totally compliments the spiciness of the chili.

The hours before dinner were spent wrapped up in a blanket in the basement watching 24. I knew I wouldn’t have time to watch it later on, but I had it get it in some how! We’re only on season three, but it’s getting INTENSE! I also got some work done and made a couple training plans throughout the afternoon.

Lunch was leftovers, in wrap form. The best way to eat leftovers, in my opinion.

I took the tofu I made for dinner Tuesday night, put it in a ww Flat Out wrap, drizzled on a little mustard, and added romaine and spinach:

IMG_7074 IMG_7080

And on the side, some snow peas:

IMG_7075And on the other side, a Vega Shake & Go Smoothie:

Vega sent me this bag of smoothie mix to try out. The stats are amazing, per usual with Vega products:

And I love the fact that it’s 100% vegan and mostly raw.

I tried the Vanilla Almondilla flavor:

The taste? Spot on for deliciousness! I am typically wary of plant-based smoothie powders, but this one tasted great. The almond flavor was very strong, though, so you have to like the taste of almond/almond extract to enjoy this (which I do, and did!) Now I just wish I could try the other flavors! Other flavors available are berry, tropical, and chocolate.

Lunch was a little on the calorie-heavy side, but I needed the cals to fuel the workout I’d just finished. After my 11:00 training appointment, I warmed up a little and then ran a 4 mile interval run. I don’t think I could have sweat anymore during that run. The gym was so warm! ‘Twas a great run, though.

Another nice thing about not working full time? Mid morning naps. Before my 11:00 training sesh, I took a nap with Regis and Kelly Niko and Clarabelle. I’ve been having early morning clients lately, and it feels SO, SO good to be able to catch up on sleep.

Speaking of catching up on sleep, I’m gonna catch up on your lovely blogs, shower my stinky bod and try to log a couple extra hours before continuing on with my day 🙂

Hope you all have a fabulous Thursday. Weekend’s almost here 😀

How good are you at napping? Are you able to fall asleep immediately, or does it turn into an hour long of *trying* to nap? I’m usually the latter. I’m hoping to change that, though!

What the Heck!

Gooood evening!

How we doin’ today? Gotta say, my day was draining in all aspects of the word. Just so much going on right now, and I’m trying to keep it together. Just rolllll with it, right? 😀

Glad ya’ll are digging the Celestial Seasonings giveaway 🙂 You have until Friday to get a chance to win it!

I was up and at em bright and early this morning to get my work out on. My training plan called for a 4 mile tempo run today! It was SO hard to get out of bed this morning. I didn’t sleep so well last night. Actually, I was sleeping well, and then I my cat “woke me up” with her meow, except I didn’t fully wake up. I could hear her meow, but my body felt super heavy, and I felt like I couldn’t even move. It was really weird, and kind of scary. After a few moments I eventually woke my body up too, but was so weirded out that I couldn’t get back to sleep. Has this happened to anyone else?!? Or am I just a weirdo? I digress..

Got to the gym to meet Heidi around 5:15, and hopped on the treadmill for a tempo run. First I jogged a 10 minute warm up, and then ran 4 thiiis:

Mile 1: 6.1-6.2

Mile 2: 6.3-6.4

Mile 3: 6.5-6.6

Mile 4: 6.7-6.2

Was a fantabulous tempo run!

Had to jet on out of there to get ready for work and have one of my current favorite breakfasts:

1 egg + 1 egg white, rice flour toast w/ organic jam and coconut butter on one piece, and Barney Butter and coconut butter on the other piece.

Almond and Coconut butter tie dye…trriiippy :-p

Gah…I drool. This breakfast kept me full for four-five hours. Stellar.

Work was the norm, and lunch was a wrap + peanut butter pretzels:

A Flat Out wrap, containing hummus, spinach, cauliflower, yellow bell pepper, baby bellas.

My wrap overfloweth.

After work, I went straight to the gym to meet a new client for a consultation and evaluation (and signed her up for sessions!!) before heading home. I had a blast, and am really looking forward to working with her 😀 Before I headed home, I did about 20 minutes of ab work. I tend to neglect ab work so I just get it in whenever I can. Gotta have a strong core!  😉

When I got home, I wanted to take advantage of the warm (50º) weather and light skies! It was already after 6, but I took Niko on a beautiful walk around the neighborhood.

Dinner was simple and simply delicious:

I massaged some kale with olive oil, sea salt, and pepper.

And then sprinkled it with nutritional yeast before popping it in the hot box for 15 minutes at 400º

Alongside was the last of my leftover Mexican lasagna:

And to wash it all down, I had my new favorite drink:

1 part POM Wonderful juice and 1 part seltzer water. This is seriously the best combination ever. I’m so glad Ryan from POM Wonderful sent my some juice to sample, because I now see many of these in my future. And it really does make the juice last so much longer. Don’t get me wrong, the juice is amazing on its own, but fabulous with a little bub. Before I drink it all up, I plan on experimenting with it in meals, too 😀

Dinner was scrumptious as ever, but after working a little with the hubski on overwhelming self-employed tax and business schtuff, I was left feeling a little snacky.

I had picked up a bottle of organic yogurt the other day from Naturally Yours. I’ve seen it a few times, but there was a coupon available, so I thought what the heck:

Poured over some Kashi Heart 2 Heart and Ezekiel Golden Flax granola:

And after I took a bite, I also thought, “what the heck?!?” This stuff pours out like milk. It mimics milk so much, that after I brought it upstairs with me to write, I thought I poured coconut milk in instead of yogurt. Then I took a bite, and tanginess flooded my taste buds. I’m not sure if it’s because I wasn’t expecting it or because this stuff just doesn’t taste good, but I wasn’t to keen on the flavor. It was a little too tangy, and I wasn’t a big fan of the vanilla flavor. least it satisfied my sweet tooth and I got in some probiotics while I was at it. I’ll give it another try, but remind myself it’s yogurt before taking my first bite 😉

Well folks, I think it’s time to call it a night. I have American Idol on DVR (I haven’t watched a single episode this season yet!) and I might watch tonight’s show and hit the hay.

Have a fabulous night and a wonderful Wednesday, all!!

How often do you do ab work? I know some people work on their core/abs almost daily! For me it’s usually once or twice a week. However, I find that many of the other strength exercises I do pull in the abs as stability muscles, so they end up getting a work out whether they like it or not!

Do you have plans for St. Patrick’s Day? Partaking in the festivities? I’ll probably wear green and have a green beer, but I’m guessing that’s as far as my festivities will go. I’m training a client right after work, and then am learning all about Quick Books!

A Dilly Dally Day

Have you guys recovered from the time change yet? I don’t think I have yet. It almost feels like jet lag…weird. However, I did like that it was still light out at 7:00 p.m. last night 🙂
I’m eeeaassing into the work week, and this is helping somewhat:

AB&J oats!
-1/2 c. water
-1/2 c. almond milk
-1 c. oat bran
-1 packet of Purevia
-1 T. hemp protein powder
-1 banana
-Handful of raisins
Topped w/ 1 T. raw almond butter and 1 T. organic strawberry jam. Loooved this combination! And that bowl was FULL. I could only finish about 2/3 of it!

Yesterday morning I dilly dallied around the house for a few hours – did some laundry, made the hubski pancakes, and messed around with LLC business names. Still haven’t nailed down that last one, but we’ve narrowed it down to a just a few. Such a hard decision!
Finally made it to the gym around noon, and did an easy 3 mile recovery run and then lifted – shoulders, chest, triceps. Was in and out in an hour!
Hopped on over to Wal-Mart and Fresh Market and was back at the crib to a quick n easy lunch before working more on LLC schtuff:

Cold Papa Murphy’s veggie pizza from last night. Was just as good! And to drink, I had a little POM juice + Seltzer water:

Mixing it with seltzer water not only jazzes it up, but it makes the oh-so-precious POM bottles last longer!

Eventually, I came up for air to take the pupster for a walk and get started on dinner. I made Mexican Lasagna!
I adapted the recipe from Eat, Drink, and Be Vegan’s Avocado, Bean, and Corn Lasagne and it was fantabulous:

IMG_5921Hubski’s on the left, mine on the right:

Had it with a simple spinach salad and Goddess dressing.

There may or may not have been a couple Caramel Delight cookies eaten afterward 😉
The rest of the night, I took it easy and kicked it with the husband watching none else but 24

Got some fun posts coming up this week including my favorite core exercises video and a major giveaway 😀

Always Time for a Fiesta

Hi there bloggies! Can you believe it’s already (almost) Thursday? This week is flying by!

During the weekdays, I usually have a cold breakfast that I can prepare the night before, due to my early a.m. workout wakeup calls. However, today I was able to make a nice hot bowl of stove top oats since I had a four mile outdoor (!!!) run planned after work. It was 40 degrees out today! I couldn’t pass up a chance to get in a refreshing outdoor run.

With my extra time, I made yoatgurt!

Instead of separating the two, I went ahead and let them be together just as they’re destined 😉 I made a typical oats + 1/2 banana + flax + almond milk oats, and combined it with homemade Greek yogurt + Purevia + cinnamon. And this time instead of an almond butter wall is an almond butter room!

Only one way out!

So I typically use packets of half stevia/half cane sugar to sweeten my oats nowadays, but last week, Purevia sent me some of their sweetener to try out! Purevia uses the sweetest part of the stevia plant to extract from the stevia leaf. It’s 200 times sweeter than sugar, but has zero calories! I took a bite, and was very pleased with the amount of sweetness and the taste! The only thing I didn’t like was the aftertaste. It didn’t linger too long, but until I either took a drink of coffee or another bit of my oatmeal, I was left with a sweet-ish taste in my mouth. Will I use the rest of the box I received in the mail? For sure! Would I buy it on my own, probably so 🙂

And since I don’t use sweetener in my coffee anymore, I had my sweet-n-low loving husband try it out.

He’s tried all of the natural sweeteners I have and hasn’t approved of any of their tastes. So today, instead of putting two packets of Sweet n Low in his coffee, he put in two packets of Purevia. Why not give it another go?

His reaction?

“I don’t like it.” “Well, actually, yeah, yeah I do…It’s weird because it’s not sweet at first, and then the sweetness amps up.”

He said it was his favorite of the natural sweeteners he’s tried yet, so that’s saying something!

On my way to work this morning, I dropped Niko, who was beginning to resemble a 5 pound sheep dog, off at the groomers:

Over my lunch break, I picked her up and she looked MUCH better!

I swear she had a pep in her step! Like her mama, a good pampering does wonders for the morale 😉

While at home, I warmed up the quinoa casserole I made the other night yet AGAIN. This was the second time this week I had this dish as leftovers, so I tried to be creative and spice is up a bit. Hummus to the rescue!

I warmed up a decent sized portion, and stirred a little more than a tablespoon in the mix:

Made is SO rich and creamy. In fact, I might add a dollop of hummus every time I make it!

When I got home from work, I changed into some warm running clothes really quick, and met one of my friends on the trail. We set out to run a nice, easy 4 miles. It was a really great run, aside from being a wee bit cold. Although it was a balmy 40 degrees out today, it was late enough in the day so the sun was starting to set, and it put quite a chill in the air that really stuck with ya! Regardless, it was a good, heart-pumping jog 🙂

The client I was supposed to train tonight called to reschedule earlier, so I took advantage of the extra time by making Black Bean and Veggie Burritos for the husband and myself. Besides…there’s always time for a fiesta!

On the left are Ezekiel tortillas topped with goat cheese, on the right whole wheat tortillas topped with cheddar cheese, and filling them all was a black bean, tomato, corn chipotle filling I sautéed on the stove prior.

I had one burrito wrapped in an Ezekiel tortilla w/ a simple side salad of spinach, topped with a bit more of the filling:

Delicious! Need to remember to make this more often…

Mmmmelty goat cheddar deliciousness 🙂

We washed it all down by splitting the rest of the Pinot I opened on…Saturday (?) night.

Now I’m watching some Big Bang Theory with a sleeping husband in the chair next to me. I think it’s time to shut this party down!

Tomorrow’s another long one! Up and at ‘em supah early 😀

What is your sweetener of choice? It depends what I’m sweetening, but I probably use stevia for most things, and then for baking I usually use maple syrup, or brown rice syrup. But sometimes nothing beats a little raw cane sugar!

Hope you all had a great hump day!! Almost the weekend again 😀
